XV – Level 6: Face Shrine

l6faceshrinekj6.png

Go left 1 screen. There are 3 Wizzrobes here. They’ll appear, shoot a beam at you, then disappear again. They don’t move to different spots, so that’s good. To kill a Wizzrobe, stun it with your Hookshot, then place a Bomb near it. If you wait to long, it will become unstunned and disappear again. To remedy this, stun it, then keep hitting it with that weapon until it’s near a wall, place a Bomb, then keep hitting it with your weapon – this will keep it stunned until the Bomb explodes. Defeat all 3, then go up through the right path and open the chest for 50 rupees. Go down 1 and up 1 (through the left path this time). Kill the Mini-Moldorm, then use your Boomerang on the Spiny. YOU CAN KILL THEM NOW! YAY! Killing one will release a small fairy, which is extremely helpful. Also Spinys always regenerate – you can leave the room and go back in to find another one. Anyway, go up 1 and left 1 screen. Kill the Shy Guy (you can kill them with the beam from your Sword). Now place a Bomb near the crystal switch and stand in the upper right path (past the lowered barrier). When the Bomb explodes, the switch will activate, raising the barriers. Now go up 1 screen. Kill the hiding Zol and Bomb the wall to your right (between the 2 torches) and go right 1 screen. Light the 2 torches in this room with your Magic Powder and kill the 4 hiding Zols to make a staircase appear. Go down it.

Down here, there’s a Goomba and a Glowball. The Glowball is huge, invincible, and bounces all over the screen, so avoid it, kill the Goomba, and go left 1 screen. This room has 2 Goombas and a Glowball. Kill the Goombas and avoid the Glowball, then go up the stairs. Kill the Mini-Moldorm and the 2 Wizzrobes, then go up 1 screen. The pot here has a small fairy inside, if you need it. Open the chest for the Power Bracelet L-2, which will allow you to pick up the big Elephant Statues in this dungeon.

ETHICS ALERT: It says that you can almost lift a whale, but you never get to try. This is what is called “False Advertising”. Beware of this, kids.

Okay, so lift the Elephant Statues and go up through the revolving door. Kill the Shy Guy, pick up the Elephant Statue, and throw it at the door to your right. Go right 1 screen, pick up the Flying Heart if you need it, then open the chest for 100 rupees. Now go back left 1 screen, hit the crystal switch and do the Bomb thing again, only go to the upper left path before it explodes. Once the barriers have been raised, go up 1 screen. Here, kill the hiding Zol and pick up the pot in the upper left corner to find a floor switch. Step on it to open the door and go left 1 screen. Kill the 2 Wizzrobes that you can access, then hit the crystal switch from above with your Boomerang and kill the other Wizzrobe. You’ll likely hit the crystal switch, so hit it again, go north, and hit it with your Hookshot to raise the lower barriers and lower the right barriers so that you can reach the chest with the Map inside. If you look at it, it looks like a face. A… cat-like face. Yeah. Anyway, go up 1 screen, kill the 3 hiding Zols, grab the Flying Heart if you need it, go right 1 screen and open the chest with the Stone Beak. Go left 1 screen, pick up a pot, and throw it at the door to open it, then go up 1 and right 1 screen. Kill the Top and open the chest for the Compass. Hit the crystal switch, grab the Flying Bomb if you need it, then go down 1, right 2, and up 1 screen. Kill the Antifairy with the Boomerang (unfortunately, no small fairies this time) and kill the 2 Wizzrobes for a Small Key. Go down 1, left 2, up 1, and left 1 screen. Kill the 2 Spinys, pick up an Elephant Statue and throw it at the door, then go up 1 screen. Open the chest for 100 rupees, then go up the staircase. The chest outside will contain 20 rupees. Go back inside, hit the crystal switch, and play Manbo’s Mambo to get to the beginning of the dungeon.

Go right 2 screens (don’t pick up the Elephant Statues – they’re helping you by blocking the Floor Traps). In this room, just keep swinging your sword. The tiles will come to life and fly towards you. Hitting them with your sword will destroy them. Once they’re all gone, you can go up 1 screen. Pick up an Elephant Statue and smash open the door to your right, then go right 1 screen. Kill all 4 Wizzrobes, pick up the Flying Arrow if you need it, and go down 1 screen. Kill the 2 Tops, then climb up the stairs and jump onto the raised barriers. Jump to the other raised barrier and go up the stairs (jump over the Floor Trap). Go up one room and open the chest for a vial of Secret Medicine (in case you’ve used your current one already) (it's 50 rupees in the non-DX version) (yay parentheses!), hop off the ledge, and go up 1 screen. Kill the Top, 2 Tektites, and the Spiny, then go up 2 screens, kill the 3 Tektites, and open the chest for a Small Key. Go back down 3 screens, left 1 screen, and up 1 screen (using a key). Kill the 2 splitting Zols and bomb the middle of the upper wall and go up 1 screen to the mini-boss.

Tosser isn’t too difficult. He’ll just walk around and throw a giant orb at you (you can block it with your Shield). Dodge it, then pick it up and throw it at him to damage him. If you hold the orb for too long, it will disappear after a while and reappear in a new place. 4 hits will kill it. Tosser and the orb will each release a small fairy. A warp will also appear, but you don’t need it, so go up 1 room. Grab the Flying Bomb and pick up the Elephant Statue to the left to make a staircase appear. Go down it.

Climb down and use your Boomerang on the Spinys, then jump over and left 1 screen. In this screen, you’ll have to jump from ladder to ladder to the left. Hold up as you jump to the left to grab onto the ladders. Once you’re back out of the catacombs, immediately go to the lower left corner of the screen, face to the right, and slash your sword repeatedly. The tiles will come to life again. Once they’re all gone, a Small Key will appear. Grab it, then use a key on the block in the upper right and go up 1 screen. Kill the Spinys and pick up the Elephant Statue. Smash it against the door to open it, then go left 1 screen. There are 2 Horse Heads in here. Pick them up and throw them. Once they’re both thrown, if they’re both right-side up, the doors will open. If not, they’ll reset and you’ll have to try again. Once the doors are open, go left 1 screen and down the staircase.

Down here, use your Pegasus Boots to dash past the Mini-Thwomps and go right 1 screen. Do the same procedure and go up the ladder. There are 3 Pols Voice here. Get out your Ocarina and play the Ballad of the Windfish to kill them. Cool, huh? Make sure it’s the Ballad of the Wind Fish and NOT Manbo’s Mambo – you don’t want to warp back to the beginning now. So now, go up 1 screen. Pick up the pots, kill the Spinys, grab the Flying Bomb and go up 1 screen. Open the chest for 200 rupees! Now kill the Top (grab the Flying Heart if you need it) and throw the Horse Heads around until the door opens, then go down 3 screens. Kill the 2 Dodongo Snakes (same procedure as last time – just watch out for the holes) and go left 1 screen. Hookshot to the far block, then use a key on the block and go up 2 screens (kill the Top along the way). Pick up a pot and throw it at the chest to get the Nightmare’s Key. Now go down 2 screens and jump off the ledge, then go down 2, left 1, and up 3 screens and go down the staircase (kill the enemies along the way). Go left 2 screens and surface.

Don’t worry about the tiles at this point – just run down 1 screen. In here, there are 4 hiding Zols and a Black Hole. Once all 4 Zols are dead (either by you killing them or by being sucked into the pit by the Black Hole), go right 1 screen (don’t worry about killing the Black Hole). New enemy in here – a Beamos. If it sees you, it will shoot a beam at you. You can’t defend against it, and you can’t destroy the Beamos. Just jump over the beam if it fires at you. Anyway, jump over the pit above you and kill the Wizzrobe (again, watch out for the Beamos), push the block into the pit, and go up 1 screen. Here there are 2 Spinys circling groups of 4 torches. You’re supposed to light the 2 unlit torches using your Magic Powder, and the 2 Spinys will explode, revealing 2 small fairies. However, YOU have the Boomerang, so don’t waste your Magic Powder supply (I know – you use it so much as it is). Anyway, kill the 2 Spinys to replenish your health, then go up 1 screen to the Nightmare’s Lair.

Facade

Right when you get in here, pick up every pot and smash them. Stand where in the lower left corner, face right, and slash like crazy with your sword. Every tile will come to life and fly towards you. You should not get hurt at all. Once they’re all gone, go and stand on Facade (he can’t hurt you directly), avoiding the holes that he makes. Drop a Bomb, and he’ll be hurt and disappear. Then he’ll reappear in the EXACT SAME SPOT. So just stand there, dropping Bombs whenever he appears. The holes in the floor will never appear in the spot where he is. How boring. After 5 bombs, he’ll die, and a Heart Container (you have 11 now) will appear. Go up and get the next instrument, the Coral Triangle. You’ll then be warped out with a message about a Mountain. Whoopee. Pay no attention to it.

XVI – To Eagle’s Tower

Once you’re outside, go down a screen and listen to the owl jabber about how the monsters are going nuts (like you didn’t already know that – you’re the one that’s fighting them, for crying out loud, not him). Once he’s done wasting your time, play Manbo’s Mambo. Now go down 6, left 1, and down 1 screen. Perform a Running Jump open the pits and go down 1 screen. You are now at the Sign Maze. Essentially, you read a sign, then follow the arrow. Whatever sign lines up with the sign that you just read is the one you will read next. You MUST read each sign you get directed to, but beware – reading it twice or reading the wrong one will result in you having to start over. I’ll walk you through it as best I can (there are hiding Zols all around here, by the way).

Read the lowest sign in this screen. Go right to the next sign, read it, then go down to the next sign. Kill the Turtle underneath the bush, then read the sign. Go to the left, slice the bush, Hookshot to the rock, pick it up, and read the sign. Pick up the other rock and use your Hookshot 3 times towards the boulder (the white thing that looks like a donut). You’ll destroy the bush, kill the Turtle that was underneath, and then Hookshot to the boulder. Go up to the next sign, read it, and go right to the next sign and read that. Go right to the next sign, read it, then go up to the next sign and read that. Go left to the next sign, read it, go down to the next sign, read it, go left to the next sign, read it, and go down to the next sign. Pick up the rock, read the sign, then go left to the next sign and read it. Finally, you’re done – a staircase will open to the right. Go down it.

There’s a huge frog here named Mamu (he looks like Wart from Super Mario Bros. 3, except more Elvis-like) and his two backup frogs. Pay the 300 rupees (the rupee trick will NOT work here) to hear them jam (it sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks after drinking for 7 hours straight). You’ll learn the Frog’s Song of Soul (3), which has the ability to make unliving things come to life. Get out of this cave, then go up 4 and left 2 screens. Push the Windmill up to reveal a staircase. Go down it and go up 1 screen, then play the Song of Soul to return a soul to the rooster remains – it will immediately come back to life and follow you around. Your own Flying Rooster. If you pick it up using your Power Bracelet, it will fly you anywhere in the screen you’re on.

TRICK: If you throw your Boomerang, then pick up the Rooster, the Boomerang will keep circling beneath you. This is a lot of fun to use on those dogs in Mabe Village you attack you when you hit them – they’ll keep jumping, and they’ll keep getting hit by the Boomerang. Actually, this gets kinda boring after a while, but it’s still cool.

Okay, so go down 1 screen and up the staircase, then go right 3 screens and use the Warp once to appear near the waterfalls. Go down 1, left 3, up the stairs and up 1, left 2, and up 1 screen to return to Tal Tal Heights. The owl will appear and tell you some useless crap about how your journey will now be harder. Whatever. Pick up a rock and enter the cave. Once inside (you remember this cave, right?), go right 1, down the staircase, right 1, up the staircase, and right 1 screen. Hookshot to the chest and open it for 50 rupees. Hookshot to the skull to get back across, then go right 1 screen and outside of the cave. Now go right 4 screens and go up the stairs, then go left 2 screens and into the cave. Go left 1 screen, then move the stones into the pits so that you can get across (pick up the Rooster to fly over the pits) and go up 1 screen. Pick up the Rooster again and fly over the giant pit to the right, go right 1 screen, and collect the Bird Key. Jump into a hole and end up outside. Go right 3 and into the cave.

All of the caves here have Keese, hiding Zols, and, in the water, Piranhas. When you see them, kill them – none of them are that difficult, as you know. Bomb the upper wall where there’s no water and go up 1 screen. Go up the staircase and go down 1 screen. All of the chests here contain 20 rupees, but you will only be able to get 4 of the 5 chests. Push the stone to the left out of the way to get the upper left chest, then go to the right and push the lowest stone down 1 to access the rightmost chest. Go back to the left and push the stone to the right of the leftmost chest down, then open the center chest. Move the lowest stone to the right to the right and open the other chest. Go outside and go down 1 screen, kill the Skull Frame, and open the chest for 20 rupees. Now go back up 1 screen. You’ll notice that the chest that you never opened is now empty. Oh well – it was only 20 rupees. Go up 1 screen, down the staircase, down 1 and right 1 screen, then out of this cave (watch out for the Turtle under the skull).

Outside, go right 1 screen, up the stairs, and into the cave. Inside, go right 2 screens and exit the cave. Outside again, go left 1 screen and into another cave (technically, it’s the same cave). Go right 1 screen and down the staircase. Jump over the pit and up the stairs, then go right 1 screen. Avoid the Beetle and go down 1 screen, then Hookshot across the pit to the stone on the far side, hop down the ledge (not into the pit), and go outside of the cave. Kill the Skull Frame and bomb the sealed cave. Inside is a Great Fairy – visit her if you’re low on health, then go back outside. Go into the rightmost cave. Go up 1 screen and up the staircase, knock the Beetle into the pit, then go left 1 screen and outside of the cave (don’t bother with the enemies here). Kill the 2 Skull Frames out here, then go left 1 screen. Pick up the bottom rock and go to the rock with the keyhole to put the Bird Key in its place. The Tower will come to life, spin around, and reveal its entrance. Go up the stairs and into the next dungeon – Eagle’s Tower.

XVII – Level 7: Eagle’s Tower

l7eaglestowerzt3.png

Go right 2 screens. Kill the 2 Like Likes and the Antifairy (the torch here will shoot fireballs at you as long as the Like Likes are alive) to get a Small Key. Go up 1 screen, through the locked door, and up the staircase. Go up 1 screen. You’ll notice an Orb and a lever that will pull the blocks to the left apart. Pick up the orb with your Power Bracelet and throw it to the left (near the blocks), then go over to the lever and pull it until the blocks are apart. Hurry over to the Orb, pick it up, and go left 1 screen. Throw the orb upwards, then kill the splitting and hiding Zols in this room. Go up 1 room and kill the Antifairy, then throw the Horse Heads until they’re both right-side up. A chest will appear with the Map inside. If you look at it, it’s kinda boring – just 4 squares. Of course, each one is a different floor, but still – not exciting.

You'll notice that the map I provide only shows three floors. That's because you'll only visit three of the four floors. You'll see why later.

Anyway, go back down 1 screen, pick up the Orb, go to the left side of the screen, and throw it at the huge pillar. The pillar will crumble. You have to smash 4 pillars. Okay then. Jump diagonally over the pit in the lower right so that you can go down 1 screen. Once there, jump over the pit, grab the Flying Heart if you need it, kill the hiding Zol, and go down 1 screen. Hit the crystal switch, then go back up 2 screens (no more jumping!). Push the block up, then go left 1 and up 1 screen. Defeat the Card Creatures for a chest with the Compass inside. Go back down 1 and right 1, push the block to the right, pick up the orb, and go down 1 screen. Go to the bottom at the screen and throw the Orb at the pillar, smashing it. Pick up the Orb, go down 1 screen, and throw the Orb over the barrier. Now go up 1 screen and fall down the rightmost pit to go down 1 level.

Once you’re back on the first floor, go right 1 screen. There are 2 Floor Traps and a Gibdos. The Gibdos will die in 2 hits from your Sword, but be aware that it won’t recoil when you hit it. Anyway, kill it, go down 1 screen, kill the Like Likes and Antifairy again, then go up 1 screen through the right side and up the staircase. Open the chest for the Mirror Shield, also called the L-2 Shield. This shield can protect you from fire, lasers, and numerous other things. Plus, it’s bigger. Anyway, fall down the pit here. Go up 2 screens for a Small Key, then play Manbo’s Mambo and leave the Tower.

Trust me.

XVIII – To Turtle Rock

Okay, so you’re going to the 8th dungeon, and you haven’t even beaten the mini-boss of the 7th dungeon. Am I crazy? Yes, but this is worth it. Go down 1 screen and jump off the right ledge. Go right 1 screen and into the cave. Inside, go left 2 screens and back out of the cave. Now go left 1 screen and into the cave here. Go left 1 screen and out of the cave. Go left 1 screen and up the stairs, then go up 1 screen, left 2 screens, up the stairs, and left 1 screen. Hookshot to the far boulder, then go left 1 screen, Hookshot across again, left 1 more screen, and slice the bush to open a staircase.

Kill the Keese and the Turtle (under the skull), then bomb the lower crevice. Go down 1 and right 1 screen, avoiding the enemies, to get a Heart Piece (11). Go left 1, up 1, and left 1 screen. Drop down the ledge and go down the staircase. Once there, go left 1 screen and either Hookshot to the stone on the other side or fly across the pit (since you still have the Rooster – normally you wouldn’t, since after you beat the 7th dungeon, he leaves). Go left 1 screen and out of the cave. Get out your Shield and go left 1 screen, kill the Mini-Moldorm, then go up the stairs, using your Shield to protect yourself from the falling rocks. Go right 1 screen and up the stairs to go up 1 screen. You’ll never have to worry about falling rocks again (be happy). Go left 1 screen, kill the Mini-Moldorm, then open the chest for 50 rupees. Now pick up the rock and go down the stairs to visit… the Bipolar Bat! Yay! Sprinkle some Magic Powder in his well and allow him to increase your Magic Powder supply. You’ll now be able to carry up to 40 sprinkles. You have all of the upgrades now, so you’ll never have to see your bipolar friend again. Okay, leave this place.

Kill the Mini-Moldorm again, then go left 1 screen and jump off the ledge. Kill the Like Like and the Skull Warrior, then blow open the sealed cave and go inside. Go up 1 screen and hold out your Shield. A fire trap will continuously blow fire at you. Your Shield will block the fire, so hold it out and advance. Once you can’t go any farther, go to the left. If you’re lucky, you won’t lose any hearts. Go up the staircase to exit this cave. Kill the Leever, then go left 1, down 1, and left 2 screens, killing the enemies along the way. Kill the two Crows, then stand directly to the left of the rightmost boulder. Play the Song of Soul, and the Turtle Head will come to life, shatter off its rocky cover, and move back and forth. Every once in a while, it will lunge forward, but you’re in such a place that you’ll never get hit. Any time its head comes near you, use your Spin Attack to deal damage. 4 Spin Attacks will kill it, clearing the opening to the last dungeon.

XIX – Level 8: Turtle Rock

l8turtlerock.png

Go up 1 screen to find a new enemy, Vire. This looks a lot like the bipolar bat you met before, but Vire is a bit more sinister. He’ll fly around, spitting fireballs at you, and then charge at you. When he gets close enough, slice him, and he’ll repeat the pattern. 2 hits will make him split into 2 giant bats, which will fly at you – hold out your sword, and they’ll fly right into it. Your Sword Beam will work better, since you won’t have to wait for him to charge at you. Just remember that you need full hearts for it to work. The Boomerang is probably your best bet, since 1 hit will completely take care of him. The Hookshot will just make it fly away and come back without getting hit. Anyway, once he’s dead, go left 1 screen. Here there’s a Beamos and 3 Ropes (snakes). Ropes are easy – 1 hit, and they’re done. They’ll move around until they see you, and then they’ll quickly come towards you. Kill the 3 Ropes and avoid the Beamos, then go up 1 screen to fight a Hinox (the mini-boss from Level 2, if you recall). Hinox is much easier now – 4 hits with your Boomerang, Hookshot, or Sword will kill it. It will release a Small Fairy – get it and go left 1 screen. This screen has a new puzzle – there’s a flashing block. Pushing it will allow you to control it (pressing up will make it go up, etc), and anywhere it goes will cover up the pit. Push it, then make it go left 4, up 2, left 1, and down 5 tiles, so that the entire pit is covered. A chest will appear with 20 rupees inside. Now go down 1 screen.

TRICK: If you use the Roc’s Feather while controlling the block, Link will jump forward. This isn’t really advised, since you can lose your concentration this way, but it’s kinda cool.

Take out the Spinys, jump over the pit (get the Flying Heart if you need it), and open the chest for 50 rupees. Go left 1 screen, and you’ll meet up with the mini-boss from Level 1. Again, he’s much easier this time (4 hits from your Sword). Once you dispose of him, another Small Fairy will be released, and you can go down 1 screen. Maneuver yourself so that you can take out the Black Hole (and the Hiding Zol), then grab the chest for the Compass. Now go up 2 screens and kill the Vire and the Spiny (technically, you only need to defeat the Vire, but you might as well kill them both) to have a Small Key drop to the floor. Play Manbo’s Mambo and return to the beginning of the level.

Go up 1 (kill the Vire again) and right 1 screen. Kill the 2 Spinys and lift the upper left jar to reveal a floor switch – opening it will open the doors. Go right 1 screen and open the chest, which has a Zol inside. Kill it, then go left 1 and down 1 screen. Kill the Mimics (avoid the fireballs from the torches) to make a staircase appear. Go down it. Drop down to the floating platform, kill the Spiny (and the Goomba if you need a heart), then jump over to the next screen. Drop onto the other floating platform (kill the Goomba if you want), then jump up to the ladder and surface. Once you’re above ground, move towards the right wall (killing the 2 Zols and avoiding the Beamos). Once the Beamos passes you, pick up the jar, step on the floor switch, and go down 1 screen. Here’s Tosser, from Level 6. Unfortunately, his difficulty has not changed since you last fight him. You know what to do. Once he’s done, collect the 2 Small Fairies and go left 1 screen. Push the block left 2, up 1, left 1, up 1, left 1, up 1, left 2, down 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, up 1, right 1, down 1, and right 1 tile to fill the pit completely. A Small Key will fall from the ceiling. Get it (kill the 2 Zols and grab the Flying Heart if you need it), then bomb the middle of the north wall and go through it. There's a crystal switch here, so hit it and go down 1, right 1, and down 1 screen. Kill the Ropes and open the chest for the Stone Beak, then play Manbo’s Mambo to return to the beginning.

Go up 2 (you can kill the Vire if you want) and right 1 screen. Push the block up 2 and left 2 tiles, then go left 1 screen using the path you’ve created. Push the top and bottom blocks to the left, then the middle block up or down, to access the chest with the Map inside (watch out for the 2 Zols). If you look at it, it looks like a turtle. I know – it’s so unexpected. Play Manbo’s Mambo again.

Go up 2 and right 1 screen (again) and push the block up 1, right 2, and up 3 tiles. Go up the path you’ve made and push the right block into the lava, then go up 1 screen. Use a key on the block, then go right 1 screen. Kill the Vire, then unlock the door and go right 1 screen. Kill the Stalfos if you want to, then go up 1 screen through the revolving door. Kill the 4 hiding Zols and go up another screen (grab the Flying Bomb), then kill the 2 Gibdos for another Small Key (grab the Flying Heart if you need it). The entire floor is cracked tiles, so don’t stand in one place for too long. Once you have the key, go left 1 screen. 2 Dodongo Snakes. These mini-bosses are everywhere, huh? Anyway, ignore them (no, don’t defeat them yet) and go left 1 screen. Jump across and go left 2 screens (killing the 4 Zols), then kill the Ropes and go down 1 screen. Kill the 2 Spinys, then shoot an arrow into the statue’s eye to make a Small Key fall. Go down 1 screen and refill your health, bomb supply, and arrow supply, then go up 1 and left 1 screen. Avoiding the Beamos, get to the left side of the chest, then push the left block down and the right block to the right so that you can open the chest with a Small Key inside. Now go down 1 screen (again, avoid the Beamos), then GO BACK UP 1 screen. The blocks have repositioned themselves. Go right 1 and up 1 screen. Kill the Vire to open the door, then go left 1 screen, up the stairs, and right 1 screen. Hookshot to the chest containing 50 rupees, then go up the stairs to go outside.

You are now on top of Turtle Rock. Defeat the Mini-Moldorm and the Crow, then grab the last Piece of Heart (12), which will complete another Heart Container (you’ll have 12 now). Go right 2 screens (note the Warp that is basically worthless), kill the Skull Warrior, and go back into Turtle Rock. You are now on a ledge above the Dodongo Snakes. Throw bombs at them until they both die, and a chest will appear on the ledge where you are (if you had killed them before you had left, you would’ve just had to kill them again). The chest contains a Small Key. Now go left 1 screen, jump off the ledge, and go up 1 screen. Hookshot to the chest to get a bottle of Secret Medicine (20 rupees in the non-DX version - don't you wish you had gotten the DX version instead?), in case you’ve used up your current bottle. Now jump down and fill your supplies and health, then go up 1 screen and up the staircase. Kill the Goomba, then go right 1 screen, jump up the ladder, and Hookshot to the the Dragon Head (avoiding the Fireballs), then go down the ladder. Go up 1 screen (through the revolving door again), and use a Bomb on the middle of the left wall (kill the Zols that appear). Grab the Flying Bomb to refill your supply, then go left 1 screen. Kill the 2 Spinys, light the torch to see, then jump over the pit and use a key on the block, then go left 1 screen (kill the 2 hiding Zols). Kill the Rope and go left 1 screen (lit the torches if you need to see). Light the torches if you need to see, then go up the stairs (kill the 2 Ropes and the Peahat if you want to) and go right 1 screen. Light the torches if you need to see, then Hookshot across to the blocks and use a key on the locked block and go down the staircase.

Jump onto the floating platform, then quickly onto the wooden block. Once the floating platform is on the right and the Fireballs have gone back into the lava, jump to the platform and onto land and go right 1 screen. Jump onto the first platform, wait until the Fireballs go back down, jump onto the other platform, wait until the Fireballs go down again, and go to the right and go up the ladder. Go down 1 screen to face the true mini-boss of this level, Blaino. This boxing fiend will spar against you. Once in a while, he’ll stop moving and punch a lot. Hold your Sword out for this battle, and when he stops moving, go above or below him and do a Spin Attack. 2 of these will kill him. If you see him winding up, move as far away from him as you can (up or down). If he hits you with this punch, you’ll be sent back to the beginning of the level, and you don’t want that. Once he’s dead, a Small Fairy and a warp will appear, but don't use the warp. Instead, go up 1 screen using the path on the right side. Since the barriers are lowered from when you hit that crystal switch, you can go up to the chest containing one of the most fun weapons in the game – the Magic Rod. It shoots fire. Nice, huh?

TRICK: You can now destroy the dogs and Cuccos by using this. And they thought they were tough stuff. HA!

Play Manbo’s Mambo and go up 1 screen. Use the Magic Rod on the Vire. Isn’t that cool? Okay, now go left 1 screen, kill the Ropes, and go up 1 screen. It’s Hinox. Use the Magic Rod twice on him! Isn’t this an awesome weapon? (HINT: The answer is “yes”.) Go left 1 screen and push the block left 4 and up 2 tiles, then go up 1 screen. Light the 2 torches using your Magic Rod, and a chest with a Small Key will appear. Play Manbo’s Mambo again and go up 2 and right 1 screen. Push the block up 1 and right 5 tiles, then go up the staircase that you can now access. Use the Magic Rod on the Ice Blocks to melt them, kill the Goombas, and go left 1 screen. Here, jump with your Roc’s Feather, then use your Magic Rod on the upper row of Ice Blocks. Jump on top of the lower row and up to the ladder, then go down (you can kill the Goombas if you want).

TRICK: If you happen to accidentally melt the wrong row, just leave the screen and come back.

Once you surface, go down the stairs and open the locked door, then go left 1 screen. It’s the Giant Beetle from Level 4. Unfortunately, your Magic Rod won’t work on it, but your Sword still will. Just watch out for the lava. Kill it, grab the Small Fairy, then go up 1 screen. Push the block up 3, right 2, down 1, right 1, up 1, right 2, down 2, left 4, down 2, right 1, up 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, up 1, right 1, down 1, and right 1 tile to fill the pit. A chest will appear with the Nightmare’s Key inside. Now play Manbo’s Mambo and go up 2 and right 1 screen. Push the block up 1 and right 5 tiles, then go right 1 screen on the path you’ve made. Get the Flying Heart if you need it, then go up the staircase.

Here, touch an Ice Block. It’ll display a message about how cold it is. The reason you do this now is so that it won’t trip you up later – the message will only appear once per screen, and if it shows when you’re trying to do a tricky Magic Rod shot, it’ll probably screw you up. Anyway, melt the Ice Block to your immediate left, go left, melt the Ice Blocks above you, kill the Goomba, jump up to where it was, go as far to the left as you can, and melt the Ice Blocks above you. Now go to the right and go up the ladder. Melt the Ice Blocks to the left, go left, melt the Ice Block above you, jump and melt the row of Ice Blocks above you, and jump up to where they were. Go on top of the Ice Blocks you haven’t melted, then fall off and use your Magic Rod once you’re next to the Ice Block blocking your path to the left. Once you’ve succeeded, go left 1 screen. Go down the ladder and touch an Ice Block so that you don’t get the message again, then melt the lowest row of Ice Blocks. Now melt the column of Ice Blocks that’s second farthest to the right (it’ll be 3 Ice Blocks). Once that’s gone, go back up the ladder, jump onto the Ice Block, then jump up the Ice Block stairs and go down the ladder.

Once you’ve surfaced, go up 1 screen using the Nightmare’s Key to enter the Nightmare’s Lair.

Hot Head

This guy’s not too difficult. You won’t even have to move. He’ll pop out of the lava as a giant flaming skull. Hit it with your Magic Rod as many times as you can, as fast as you can. If you’re lucky, the skull will break. If not, it will go back into the lava, and you’ll have to try again when he jumps out again. When he goes back into the lava, fireballs will spit out in 4 directions – use your Shield to block them. Once the skull breaks, you’ll see a weird little… blobby creature. This is the actual boss. Use the same tactics – go nuts with the Magic Rod when he pops out of the lava. After a number of hits, he’ll die, and the Heart Container (13 now) will fall right on top of you. Jump over the lava to go up a screen and receive the Thunder Drum, your 7th (though it’s supposed to be the 8th) instrument. You’ll be warped out with a message about the Egg, but you’ve still gotta go back and beat the 7th Level! So ignore the message.

XX – Back To Eagle’s Tower

Once you’re outside of Turtle Rock, play Manbo’s Mambo, then go left 1, up 1, right 1, and up 1 screen, pick up the rock and go to the upper ledge, go right 2 and up 1 screen, and you’ll be back at Tal Tal Heights. Lift the rock, go in the cave (note that your Magic Rod will NOT work on Beetles), go right 1 screen, down the stairs, right 1 screen, up the stairs, right 2 screens, and out of the cave. Go right 5 screens and into the cave, then go right 1 screen and outside. Go right 1 screen and into another cave, then go right 2 screens and go outside, go left 1 screen, into the cave, right 1 screen, down the stairs, right 1 screen (take the upper path), down 1 screen, and go outside. Kill the Skull Frame, visit the Great Fairy if you need to (the lower cave), then go into the upper cave and go up 1 screen, up the stairs, left 1 screen, and go outside. Go left 1 screen and back into the Eagle’s Tower.

XXI – Eagle’s Tower: Take 2

Go right 2 and up 1 screen and go up the staircase. Go up 1 and left 1 screen. Jump down across the pit and down 1 screen. Fall down the leftmost pit. Climb up the stairs and go up 1 and left 1 screen, then jump onto the barriers and go left 1 and down 1 screen. Open the chest for the Stone Beak. Play Manbo’s Mambo, then go right 2 and up 1 screen, up the staircase, up 1 screen, and down 2 screens. Hit the Crystal Switch and play Manbo’s Mambo again. Go right 2 and up 1 screen, go up the staircase, and go down 1 screen. Kill the Antifairy, use a key on the block, go up the stairs and go left 1 screen. The Orb is still here from your last visit. Don’t pick it up yet. Go left 2 screens (ignore the Card Creatures for now) and kill the Hinox to get a Small Key. Fall down one of the pits on the left side to go down a level. Go up 3 screens and open the chest for 20 rupees, then play Manbo’s Mambo and go right 2 and up 1 screen, up the stairs, down 1 and left 1 screen. This time, pick up the Orb and go left 1 screen. Throw it somewhere and defeat the Card Creatures to make a chest appear. Throw the Orb across the small barriers (over the pit), then go left 1 and up 2 screens (using the revolving door).

Kill the Antifairy, then go to the lower right corner and face left. Keep slashing with your sword until all of the tiles are gone and the door opens. Go right 1 screen. Bomb the lower wall in between the 2 torches, then go down 1 screen. Bomb the lower wall again and go down 1 screen. Hookshot to the chest and open it for 1 Bomb. Yes, I’m serious – it’s 1 Bomb. Now pick up the Orb and go up 1 screen. Throw it at the pillar to make it crumble, then pick up the Orb and go down 1 screen and throw the Orb down across the barriered pit again. Fall down the pit and go right 2 and up 1 screen, up the staircase, down 1 and left 2 screens. Pick up the Orb (kill or avoid the Card Creatures), then go left 1 and up 2 screens. Throw the orb to the lower left corner, defeat the Antifairy, stand in the lower right corner, face left, and swing your sword to break all of the tiles. Once the door opens, pick up the Orb and go left 1 screen. Throw the Orb at the pillar to make the Tower collapse, getting rid of a floor (no, you don’t get crushed). Throw the Orb into a pit to get rid of it (it’ll appear back on the altar where you first found it). Play Manbo’s Mambo.

Go right 2 and up 1 screen, up the staircase, down 1 and left 1 screen, hit the Crystal Switch with your Boomerang, and up the staircase. Kill the Helmasaurs and refill your Bomb supply, then go up 1 and right 1 screen. You’ll meet a weird little guy (who happens to be the mini-boss, kinda). Go right below the door you came in from, face to the right, and keep swinging your sword. The weird guy will play a flute, summoning 6 bats to fly at you. They’ll all meet their end by your sword. He’ll curse you, saying that you killed his brothers (I’d never admit that those pathetic things were my brothers), and get out of there. A warp will appear. Go up 1 screen. Kill the 3 Spinys, then push the 2 blocks together to make a chest appear with the Nightmare’s Key. Once you have that, go down 1 and left 2 screens. In this area, there are lots of Goombas, which are great to jump on so that you can refill your life before fighting the Nightmare. Go up 1 screen using the Nightmare’s Key, then go up 1 and right 1 screen (avoiding the Floor Traps, Beamos, and Peahats). Kill the Zol, avoid the Beamos, and throw the Horseheads until a chest appears with a bottle of Secret Medicine, in case you’ve used up what you’ve had (it's 100 rupees in the non-DX version, which would be cool if you needed rupees at this point in the game, which you don't). Go left 1 and down 1 screen. Go up the stairs and Hookshot to the block to the right. Jump on the Goombas around here to refill your hearts if you need to (you can keep going up and down 1 screen – sooner or later, the Goombas will reappear), then go down 1 screen and right 1 screen. Go up the stairs to go out of the Tower. Go up the ladder to where the Nightmare is.

Evil Eagle

The weird little guy that cursed you before is back, but this time, he’s got a huge eagle to ride upon. Normally, you’d either use your Boomerang, Hookshot, or Bow to defeat this guy. However, thanks to me, you have the Magic Rod. How this boss works is that he’ll fly back and forth above you until you hit him 3 times in the beak, and then he’ll attack you. Here’s the trick – the Magic Rod kills him in 3 hits. So he won’t attack. Therefore, he’s insanely easy. Aren’t you glad I made you leave and come back? You’re welcome. Now pick up the Heart Container (finishing your Life Bar at 14 Hearts) and fall off the tower (faster than climbing down). Go back into the tower, and you’ll see that the door to your right is open. Jump off the ledge and go in to get your last instrument – the Organ of Evening Calm. Yay! You’re almost done! You’ll be warped out with a message telling you that the Ocarina is key, but that’s speaking of Turtle Rock, and you’ve already been there, so follow the procedure that you’ve followed so far and… ignore it.

XXII – Last Minute Things

When you leave the Tower, you’ll notice that the Rooster is gone. Whoopee. Jump off the ledge using the opening on the right side, then go right 1 screen and into the cave. Go left 2 screens and out of the cave, then go left 1 screen, into the cave, left 1 screen, and back out of the cave. Go left 1 screen, up the stairs, and up 1 and left 2 screens. Here there’s a house with a guy who likes Cuccos. He now has your Flying Rooster. You don’t have to visit him if you don’t want to.

Photo 12: From here, go right 1 screen and jump over to the other side of the bridge, then go right 1 screen. Pick up the rocks (one of them has a Turtle underneath it, so kill it), then go right 1 more screen. Kill the Turtle underneath the bush and go to the platform where it was. Now come back, and Photo Mouse will come to take a picture (“Close Call”). He’ll end up falling off of the bridge, which makes me happy (I never liked Photo Mouse). Now you’ve gotten all of the photos (unless you decided, like me, to not get the one of Link stealing). When that’s over, the Turtle will be back, so kill it and go left 3 screens to meet up with the non-DXers.

Go left 2 screens (using the Hookshot again). You’ll see Marin trapped up here. Hookshot across to save her. She’ll be very grateful and start telling you something (presumably her feelings for Link), when Tarin comes up and yells towards you two. Then she leaves. STUPID JERK! Marin was THIS CLOSE to telling Link how she felt about him, and that fat shroom-eating buffoon had to come and ruin it! GAH! Anyway, play Manbo’s Mambo and go down 5, left 3, down 1, left 2, and down 1 screen to get to the Library. Go inside and read the lower right book, entitled “Dark Secrets And Mysteries Of Koholint”. Yes, you really want to read this book (and you can, since you have the Magnifying Lens). Copy down the directions it tells you on a sheet of paper – it’s different every time, so I can’t help you. There are 8 directions, there will always be a pattern, none of the directions will be down, and the last direction will always be up. That's all I can tell you - the rest depends on your file.

Go out of the Library and play Manbo’s Mambo, then go left 1, up 1, right 1, up 1 screen, pick up the rocks, take the upper path, and go left 1 screen. Go up the ladder to go up 1 screen. The owl will be here, waiting for you. He tells you that playing the 8 Siren Instruments in front of the Egg is the only way to leave the island. Then he flies off. Go up 1 screen. Play the Ballad of the Wind Fish in front of the egg, and all 8 of the Instruments of the Sirens will appear and accompany you. This event will blow a hole in the egg, allowing you passage inside. The owl will come back and tell you to go in. Doesn’t he give such sage advice? I’ll bet you never even CONSIDERED going into the giant hole that you just created. Anyway, go in and Save and Quit so that you keep all of your progress (once you beat the game, it goes back to where you last saved – this way you don’t have to do everything again).

XXIII – Wind Fish’s Egg

This dungeon isn’t much of a dungeon. Go up 1 screen, and you’ll fall down. It’s inevitable. Nothing you can do will change this. Once you’re in the lower level, go the pattern that you had read from the book, and you’ll find another pit. Hop in!

The Nightmares

When you land, The Nightmares will talk to you about their plans for this world and yell at you for disrupting their plans. Once they’re done, you will face The Nightmares, the final bosses of the game. There are 6 stages, each one a different Nightmare. 5 are based on Link’s past, and the last 1 is a boss never before (or since) encountered in a Zelda game.

Stage I – Giant Gel

This guy just jumps around. Sometimes he’ll disappear and reappear. Hit him with your Magic Powder 3 times, and he’s done.

Stage II – Shadow Agahnim

This guy will shoot 2 kinds of fireballs at you – one is a big one, which you have to reflect back at him with your Sword (this hurts him - you'd think he'd be immune to his own magic, but whatever), and the other is a cross, which will split into numerous small fireballs on contact (you can’t reflect these). Hope for the big ones. When you reflect 4 back at him, he’ll spin around and be done.

Stage III – Shadow Moldorm

Basically like the Moldorm from the Tail Cave, except that it takes 8 hits and there are no holes. Again, the last segment of him is his weak point.

Stage IV – Shadow Ganon

What is usually the biggest, baddest boss in every Zelda game is a pretty big pushover here. Just use your Dash Attack against him 6 times, and he’s gone. He’ll spin his trident around and shoot fire bats at you, but they aren’t really much of a problem, even when they hit you.

Stage V – Shadow Lanmola

Easiest boss in the entire game. Just hit him once with your Magic Rod, and he’s done. Incredible.

Final Stage – Dethl

This giant eye with arms will move up and down, swinging his arms in circles. Jump over the arms and attack his eye (when it opens) with your boomerang. 1 hit and he’s done. Kind of disappointing. If you'd rather have a long battle, take out your Bow and shoot him with 20 Arrows.

Seeing as how I’ve spoiled the rest of this game for you, I see no point in hiding what else happens. If you feel like finding out for yourself, then don’t read on, but just remember, if you wanted to find all of this out for yourself, you wouldn’t have used this guide. Think about that.

So you’ve beaten The Nightmares. Now you can leave this island! Go up the stairs and talk to the owl, who disappears, saying that this whole island was, in fact, a dream of the Wind Fish, just as the Southern Face Shrine had said. Gah. Then the Wind Fish shows up, talking in HUGE, CAPITAL LETTERS (except for your name, if it is not in all caps). He tells you about everything he dreamed, and then tells you to play the Instruments of the Sirens. The entire island, including everyone on it, disappears. Link will NEVER KNOW MARIN’S TRUE FEELINGS FOR HIM! BLARGH! So anyway, Link gets shot up a giant geyser and wakes up floating on a log (from his ship). He gets up, sits there for a while (don’t know why – if it were me, I’d try to find shore), and then notices the sun disappear. He looks up to see the Wind Fish, flying in the sky. Link smiles, although I think I’d still be pretty upset that everything I just did was in the mind of a giant, flying whale. Then the credits roll.

TRICK: After the credits are done, if you’ve never died (which, if you’ve been using this guide, you probably haven’t), you’ll see Marin with wings flying around. In the DX version, you’ll also see her portrait in the sky. How beautiful.

There. That’s it. Now you can happily gloat to your friends that you beat the game using a guide. Of course, you can also impress them with the Tricks and Ethics that you learned from this guide, especially the part about the Evil Eagle. Very few people know about that yet.

XXIV - Controls, Items, Appendices, and Tricks

Controls

This section is most beneficial to those of you who have recently bought the game (used, of course - there's hardly any way to find it new anymore), and found that the game did not come with an instructional booklet. Fear not! Here are the controls, though they're pretty easy to figure out on your own.

  • + Control Pad: Moves Link. Also can be used to select the item you want to use and move special blocks.
  • A Button: One of your item buttons. You can put any usable item here to use. This also allows you to talk to people and check signs.
  • B Button: Your other item button. Like the A Button, you can put any usable item here. This will also automatically select "No" when you're given a choice, and in the non-DX version, you can skip a good number of conversations by pressing this (this feature was taken out when the DX version was released, which is one of the only downsides to getting the DX version).
  • Start Button: This will bring up the Subscreen, where you can select usable items for the A and B Buttons and check to see how many Secret Seashells and Instruments you have. In dungeons, you can also view the Dungeon Map (if you have it).
  • Select Button: This will open up the Overworld Map so that you can see where you are, where you've been, and where you haven't been. There aren't really any shining spots where you have to go, so this is pretty pointless unless you're looking for a specific landmark that you've already been to. In the DX version, you can also press this in the Subscreen to see how many Heart Pieces you have, how many Photos have been taken, and what color clothes you're wearing (which, if you're playing on a Game Boy Color or Advance, should be pretty obvious because it's in color).
  • A+B+Start+Select: This combination will open up the Save Screen. You can either choose to Continue or Save and Quit.
  • Power Switch: This turns the game off and on. This should be pretty obvious.

Usable Items

There are a lot of items in this game that can be set to either the A Button or the B Button. Here they are, in order of when you obtain them in this guide.

  • Shield: This can be used to block projectiles - you'll get this automatically from Tarin in the house where you wake up. In the beginning of the game, before you get your sword, it can also be used to push Urchins out of your way. It can get eaten by Like Likes, and then you'll have to buy another. An upgraded version, the Mirror Shield, is available in L-7: Eagles Tower. This shield is larger, shinier, and can block beams and fire. It also cannot be eaten, so you'll never have to worry about replacing it.
  • Sword: This is your main weapon, found on Toronbo Shores. Use it to slash enemies, grass, Cuccos, dogs, and other random things. It can also be used to test if walls are bombable. An upgraded version is available when you get 20 Secret Seashells - this sword is twice as powerful as your original sword, and can also shoot beams that are just as powerful as the sword itself. These beams can only be fired if you have full health.
  • Magic Mushroom: An optional item you can find in the Mysterious Woods. You need it to give to a witch so that you can get some Magic Powder, but you can also get Magic Powder in the Trendy Game. If you follow this guide, you'll never get this item.
  • Magic Powder: This can be sprinkled on torches to light them, but beyond that, it's pretty worthless except for a couple of mini-bosses and turning a raccoon into a human (I'm not making this up). It can be obtained either in the Trendy Game or by giving the Magic Mushroom to a witch (in this guide, you'll be using the Trendy Game). You can originally hold 20 handfuls maximum, but if you find the Bipolar Bat, you can double your amount to 40 handfuls.
  • Deluxe Shovel: This can be used to dig up stuff like rupees, hearts, and Secret Seashells. Sometimes you'll also dig up enemies, which you can then defeat. It's not really all that useful after you have 20 Secret Seashells. You can buy it at the Mabe Store for 200 rupees.
  • Bombs: These blow up (bet you never guessed that, huh?). They can be used to defeat enemies and create holes in walls that usually lead to secret caverns and passageways. You can buy these in the Mabe Store (10 rupees for 10 bombs) after buying the Deluxe Shovel, and can also be found under some pots and by defeating some enemies. You can hold 30 maximum until you come across the Bipolar Bat, who will double the amount you can carry to 60.
  • Roc's Feather: This allows you to jump over one space, whether it's a hole, an enemy, or absolutely nothing. It's obtained in L-1: Tail Cave.
  • Power Bracelet: This allows you to pick up heavy stones and pots to throw around. You'll find it in L-2: Bottle Grotto. An upgraded version which allows you to pick up giant elephant statues and push the rooster windmill is found in L-6: Face Shrine.
  • Pegasus Boots: These boots will make you dash at high speeds. If you run into trees, something might fall out. These can also be used with your sword to perform a dash attack, or the Roc's Feather to perform a running jump. They are found in L-3: Key Cavern.
  • Ocarina: Found in the Dream Shrine, this item can be used to play one of three songs. The Ballad of the Wind Fish will wake the Wind Fish once you have all 8 Siren Instruments, but otherwise, the only thing it's good for is killing Pols Voice. Manbo's Mambo will be used extensively, particularly if you use this guide - it can warp you to the beginning of a dungeon you're in, or to Crazy Tracy's house in the overworld. The Frog's Song of Soul will be used twice - once to revive a flying rooster, and once to gain access to L-8: Turtle Rock. Note that unlike Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, you can't fool around and make up your own songs.
  • Bow: This is a powerful item that can shoot arrows at faraway enemies. You probably won't be using this too often, but it's still pretty cool. You can buy it at the Mabe Shop for 980 rupees after buying the Deluxe Shovel.
  • Arrows: These are automatically equipped with the Bow. You'll get 20 when you buy the Bow, and can then buy 10 for 10 rupees after that. You can also find them after defeating enemies or picking up pots. At first, you can only hold 30, but the Bipolar Bat will double the amount you can carry, up to 60.
  • Hookshot: This is a pretty cool item that can defeat enemies from a distance, bring items like rupees and hearts to you, and latch on to blocks and chests so that you can easily access them. This is found in L-5: Catfish's Maw after a wild goose chase, but it's well worth it.
  • Boomerang: One of the best items in the game. This will cut grass, defeat enemies, retrieve items out of your reach, and always come back to you! It's an optional weapon, but it's definitely something you'll want to get. You can obtain it after you get the Magnifying Glass from the Trading Sequence, so that you can see the person willing to give it to you down on Toronbo Shores. There's one catch - you must be willing to trade one of your other items for it. By the time you can get the Boomerang, you won't need your Deluxe Shovel anymore, so trade that for it. You can always trade back, but you won't.
  • Magic Rod: The last item you'll get in the game, and by far the most fun. This item will light things on fire, burn grass and enemies, and sometimes cause players to laugh maniacally as they roast Cuccos. It is found in L-8: Turtle Rock.

Collectible Items

These are items that you automatically use.

  • Rupees: The currency on Koholint Island (and every other Zelda game, actually). You can hold 999 of these at a time, and can use them to buy items. You can find them pretty much everywhere, either as 1, 5, 20, 50, 100, or 200 bundles.
  • Hearts: These restore your life bar by one heart. Like rupees, they're pretty much found everywhere, except you'll only find one at a time, and they won't be in chests.
  • Piece of Power: Not a collectible item, but it is automatically used. If you pick this up, you'll move faster, do twice as much damage, and give your sword explosive power. This will last as long as you don't enter a new area, or until you're hit enough times. You cannot have this and a Guardian Acorn at the same time - whichever item you get last will cancel out the other one.
  • Guardian Acorn: Not a collectible item, but it is automatically used. If you pick this up, you'll take half the damage your normally would. This will last as long as you don't enter a new area, or until you're hit enough times. You cannot have this and a Piece of Power at the same time - whichever item you get last will cancel out the other one.
  • Secret Seashells: There are 26 of these spread out throughout Koholint Island. You'll only need 20, and will likely only find 20 before getting sick of looking for them.
  • Heart Pieces: Getting 4 of these will give you a new Heart Container to add to your health bar. There are 12 scattered throughout Koholint Island, giving you 3 Heart Containers overall.
  • Tail Key: Found in the Mysterious Woods, this is used to get into L-1: Tail Cave.
  • Heart Container: These increase your health bar by one heart.
  • Instruments of the Sirens: These are guarded by the Nightmares, and can be used to wake the Wind Fish once you have all 8. They serve no other purpose.
  • Secret Medicine: This is used automatically when you lose all of your hearts, much like Fairies in the newer Zelda games. It can be bought from Crazy Tracie after getting the Power Bracelet from L-2: Bottle Grotto. You can only carry one at a time, but you probably won't even use the first one you buy. It's still nice to have insurance, though.
  • Golden Leaves: You need 5 of these to get the Slime Key from Richard. Completely pointless besides that. All 5 are found in Richard's Castle.
  • Slime Key: Found after giving Richard 5 Golden Leaves and traversing a grassy maze, this will open up L-3: Key Cavern.
  • Red Clothes: This can only be obtained in the DX version after completing the optional Color Dungeon. These clothes will make it so that you always have a Piece of Power, effectively doubling your attack and giving your sword explosive power. You can always exchange this for the Blue Clothes if you want to by going back to the end of the Color Dungeon.
  • Blue Clothes: This can only be obtained in the DX version after completing the optional Color Dungeon. These clothes will make it so that you always have a Guardian Acorn, so you'll take half the damage your normally would. You can always exchange this for the Red Clothes if you want to by going back to the end of the Color Dungeon.
  • Angler Key: Found in the Yarna Desert, this will gain you access to the L-4: Angler's Tunnel.
  • Flippers: These allow you to swim in deep water, which apparently, you can't do otherwise. Pressing the A Button will make you swim faster, and pressing the B Button will make you dive, which helps avoid attacks and find hidden caves and items. You'll find them in L-4: Angler's Tunnel.
  • Magnifying Glass: This allows you to see hidden enemies and characters, as well as read the lower right book in the library so that you can traverse the Wind Fish's Egg. It can be found after completing the Trading Sequence.
  • Face Key: Found in the South Face Shrine, this will allow you entrance to L-6: Face Shrine (the North Face Shrine).
  • Bird Key: Found in a cave in Tal Tal Heights, this will turn a tower around so that you can go into L-7: Eagle's Tower.

Heart Piece Locations

Heart Pieces are very important in any Zelda game (except the two for NES, and the two for DS). If you followed the guide, you will have all of them, but if you're just looking for the Heart Pieces, here they are, in the order that you can obtain them.

  • 1. REQUIREMENTS: Sword L-1. Find the well in Mabe Village, slice the grass on the ledge above, and jump into the well.
  • 2. REQUIREMENTS: 20 Rupees or more. Go fishing in the northern part of Mabe Village. It's inside the fish closest to you, so when you cast, hold right on the D-Pad to get the bobber closer to you. You'll probably catch a runt first, so try it again and move the bobber closer to you. Once the fish latches on, press A or B rapidly (or rock between them) to catch the fish. You'll get 20 rupees as well, which isn't bad.
  • 3. REQUIREMENTS: Roc's Feather. One screen right of the exit of the Mysterious Woods (one screen left of Crazy Tracy's), you'll see this surrounded by pits. It's impossible to miss on your way to save Bow-Wow.
  • 4. REQUIREMENTS: Power Bracelet L-1. In the cave in the Mysterious Woods down 1 and right 1 screen of where Tarin was (the same cave you went through to get to the Magic Mushroom, if you didn't follow this guide), go through until you see it surrounded by skulls. Use the Power Bracelet to get them out of the way, and grab it.
  • 5. REQUIREMENTS: Bombs, Pegasus Boots. Exit Mabe Village using the right-side exit and go right 2 screens and up 1 screen. You'll see a blocked cave here, so bomb it and go in. Avoid the Spiny and use the Pegasus Boots to destroy the obstacles. Go up one screen, around the stones (avoiding another Spiny), and down one screen. There's a chest with rupees here, so get it if you want, but otherwise, follow the right-side wall up one screen and bomb the wall when you're stopped by a northern wall section. The hidden passage will lead to this one.
  • 6. REQUIREMENTS: Bombs, access to Yarna Desert. Go to the quicksand where you fought (or will fight) Lanmola for the Angler Key. Drop into the sand to reach a cave. Bomb the northern wall to find an area with this one.
  • 7. REQUIREMENTS: Flippers. Go to Angler's Tunnel and go right 2 screens to find a cave. Once inside, dive underwater and swim around to find this piece.
  • 8. REQUIREMENTS: Flippers. Outside of Richard's Castle (where you got the Golden Leaves), go to the bridge that the monkeys made. Go up until you can enter the water, then go left until you can't anymore, then down until you can't anymore. Dive underwater and swim around until you find it.
  • 9. REQUIREMENTS: Bombs, Hookshot. Go to the Ghost's Grave that you had to lead the Ghost to before entering Catfish's Maw. Go down 1 and right 1 screen to find an underground cavern. Once inside, go right one screen and jump to the cracked stone (kill the Keese while you're at it). Blow it up, then use the Hookshot to get across the large pit. After this, just jump to this one.
  • 10. REQUIREMENTS: Bombs, Hookshot, Bow. Go to the Animal Village, and leave through the south exit as though you were going to Yarna Desert. Once you're at the screen where Marin sang to the walrus, go north until you reach a blocked cave. Blow it up and go inside. Once you're in, go left 1 and up 1 screen, then equip the bow and the bombs, face the cracked stone, and press both buttons together to release a bomb arrow. Hookshot to the other side and grab this piece.
  • 11. REQUIREMENTS: Bombs, Hookshot. On your way to L-8: Turtle Rock from eastern Tal Tal Heights (which is why you need the Hookshot), you'll find a lone bunch of grass that, when sliced, will lead to an underground passage. Once inside, go down 1 and right 1 screen, avoiding the enemies, to get this one.
  • 12. REQUIREMENTS: Access to L-8: Turtle Rock. Get on top of Turtle Rock using the staircase in the northern part of the dungeon, and you'll see this on a ledge above you.

Secret Seashell Locations

The Secret Seashells create the first "collection" side-quest in a Zelda game that yields a reward. There are 26, but you only need 20 to get the L-2 Sword. If you followed this guide, you'll be finished collecting after bringing the Ghost back to his house. If you haven't been following this guide and need some tips on where to find them, this is for you. This is in the order you can find them.

  • 1. REQUIREMENTS: Sword L-1. In the screen directly south of the Mabe Store, slice the bushes to find this one.
  • 2. REQUIREMENTS: Shovel. In the tiny Chomp's house (next to Bow-Wow), dig in the lower right corner.
  • 3. REQUIREMENTS: Bombs, access to L-1: Tail Cave. From the entrance of the dungeon, go up 1, left 1, and up 1 screen. Bomb the left wall to find the chest with this inside.
  • 4. REQUIREMENTS: Shovel, Power Bracelet. From the Maple's Hut (the witch's place), go left 1 and down 1 screen. Slice the bush and dig where it was to find this.
  • 5. REQUIREMENTS: Power Bracelet. From the well in Mabe Village, go up 3 and right 1 screen. It's in the chest there.
  • 6. REQUIREMENTS: 5 Secret Seashells. Go to the Seashell Mansion and show that you have 5, and you'll get this. If you have more or less than 5, you won't get this, so if you're already over 5, too bad.
  • 7. REQUIREMENTS: Access to Ukaka Prairie. One screen to the right of the Seashell Mansion, you'll find this in some bushes.
  • 8. REQUIREMENTS: Power Bracelet. From the Seashell mansion, go down 1, left 1, and down 2 screens. Lift the rock here to find it.
  • 9. REQUIREMENTS: Bombs, Shovel. From #7, go left one screen and go in the cave. Go left 1 screen and bomb the indent in the left wall, then jump to the staircase. Work your way around and leave the cave through the opening provided for you, then go up one screen and dig around to find your prize.
  • 10. REQUIREMENTS: Roc's Feather, 5 Golden Leaves. When you give Richard his Golden Leaves, he'll open a cave for you. A chest on the left side of this cave holds a Secret Seashell.
  • 11. REQUIREMENTS: 10 Secret Seashells. Go to the Seashell Mansion and show that you have 10, and you'll get this. Like #6, this is a one-time-only deal.
  • 12. REQUIREMENTS: Shovel. When you get to L-3: Key Cavern, don't go inside yet. Go right 1, up 1, and right 1 screen, and you'll see four grass patches. Dig in the middle of them to find this one.
  • 13. REQUIREMENTS: Pegasus Boots. From the warp in Ukaka Prairie, go down 1 screen and run into the tree to knock this loose.
  • 14. REQUIREMENTS: Pegasus Boots. From the Tail Cave, go left 1 screen. There's a lone tree here. Run into it and this'll fall out.
  • 15. REQUIREMENTS: Sword L-1. From the upper left screen of Animal Village, go left 1, down 2, left 1, and up 1 screen.
  • 16. REQUIREMENTS: Access to Yarna Desert. From the cave where you retrieve the Angler Key (and Heart Piece #6), go down 3 screens keeping to the right. This'll be under a rock at the end.
  • 17. REQUIREMENTS: Flippers. From L-3: Key Cavern, go right 1 and up 1 screen. There's a bush here that you can slice, and this will come out. Slice it from above, though, or else it'll probably fall into the water.
  • 18. REQUIREMENTS: Flippers. From the Ghost's House by the Bay, go right 2 screens and swim to the island in the middle. Chop the bush to get this.
  • 19. REQUIREMENTS: Sword L-1, access to Martha's Bay. From #17, go up 1 screen and slice that bush for another Seashell.
  • 20. REQUIREMENTS: Power Bracelet. After bringing the Ghost back to his grave, go back to his house and pick up the pots. This one will be underneath one of them. If you want to be done collecting them by now, I understand.
  • 21. REQUIREMENTS: Boomerang or Bow (Boomerang's better). From the entrance to the Southern Face Shrine, go down 2, left 2, up 1, and right 1 screen. Underneath one of the Armos is a staircase with a chest, which holds this inside.
  • 22. REQUIREMENTS: Access to L-6: Face Shrine (Power Bracelet L-2 not required, but recommended). From the entrance, go left 1, up 1, left 1, up 1, left 1, and up 3 screens. The stairs leading outside will bring you to this Seashell.
  • 23. REQUIREMENTS: The Flying Rooster. When you get the Flying Rooster, go to Richard's Castle. From the entrance of the castle, go down 1 and left 1 screen. Use the Rooster to get across the gaps and into the stairs, where a Seashell is.
  • 24. REQUIREMENTS: Access to East Tal Tal Heights (aka Flippers). From the Cucco Addict's House, go right 2 screens. It's under one of the rocks.
  • 25. REQUIREMENTS: Bombs, access to East Tal Tal Heights (aka Flippers). From the Cucco Addict's House, go right 2, down 1, and right 1 screen, and go in the cave. Bomb the upper wall and go up 1 screen, then go up the stairs. Go down 1 and out of the cave to find this.
  • 26. REQUIREMENTS: Access to L-7: Eagle's Tower. From the entrance, go right 2 and up 1 screen and up the stairs. Go up 1, left 1, and down 2 screens and hit the crystal switch. Go up 1 screen and fall into a pit. From there, go down 1, right 1, and up 1 screen to go back upstairs. Go down 1 and left 3 screens. Here, fall down one of the pits on the far left. When you land, go up 3 screen to get this. You've now gotten all 26 Secret Seashells! Was it worth it? (Answer: Probably not)

Photo Locations

The Photos are an extra side-quest in the DX version. Back when the Game Boy Color was new, the Game Boy Printer and Game Boy Camera were "hot stuff". The pictures gotten on the DX version could be printed off on Game Boy Printers. Now these are pretty obsolete, and you can find the pictures on the internet to print out if you really want them, but it's still cool to see them. They can only be accessed once you talk to the Photo Mouse east of L-2: Bottle Grotto. Here they are, in the order they appear in the Photo Album (NOT the order you can obtain them in).

  • 1A: This one is automatically taken if you talk to the Photo Mouse and select "Yes" anytime in the questioning process. It'll show you smiling and giving the peace sign. You can either get 1A or 1B, but not both.
  • 1B: This one is automatically taken if you talk to the Photo Mouse and select "No" every time he gives you a choice. It'll show you collapsed on the floor in a daze. You can either get 1A or 1B, but not both.
  • 2: This can only be gotten if Marin is with you. Take her to the lower-left corner of the overworld map, and go to the edge of the cliff. You'll get a scene with here, and Photo Mouse will take a picture of Marin pointing out to sea and you smiling.
  • 3: This can only be gotten if Marin is with you. Drop down the well in Mabe Village, and Photo Mouse will be waiting for you. He'll take a picture of Marin landing on you.
  • 4: This can only be gotten if Marin is with you. Take her to the windmill in Mabe Village, and Photo Mouse will get ready to take a picture of you two in front of it. Tarin will barge in and insist he be in the picture as well. The result is Tarin looking cheerful while you and Marin look like you're going to punch his face in.
  • 5: This can be gotten by going to Grandpa Ulrira's house (south of Madam Meow-Meow's house) and looking in one of the windows. Photo Mouse will take a candid shot of Grandpa Ulrira talking on the phone, happy as can be.
  • 6: This can be gotten after returning Bow-Wow to Madam Meow-Meow. Get close to Bow-Wow, and Photo Mouse will insist that you get closer so that he can take a picture. Bow-Wow will jump at you, and the picture is taken as you're running away, probably looking for a change in clothing.
  • 7: This can only be gotten if you steal something from the Mabe Store. I suggest the Bow, since it's the most money, and afterwards you don't have to go back in to buy anything. However, note that if you do go back in, the shopkeeper will kill you. Also, everyone in the game, including the Wind Fish, will call you "THIEF" for the rest of the game. As such, I suggest getting this photo after beating the game. Oh, and if you steal something before talking to the Photo Mouse, you obviously won't get this picture.
  • 8: This can be gotten after finishing the Trading Sequence. Go back to the fisherman under the bridge, and you'll see the Photo Mouse swimming underwater. Talk to the fisherman, and he'll catch the mouse, who'll ask to take a picture. You pose, holding up your sword, and in doing so, knock the fisherman out of the boat. The resulting picture shows the fisherman floating down the river while you look on, helpless.
  • 9: This can be gotten after getting the Magnifying Glass. Go to the house in the northeast corner of Animal Village and examine the puddle. A Zora will pop out and talk to you. Photo Mouse will show up and take a picture of you too. The Zora looks happy, but you look ready to shove Photo Mouse's camera up his nose.
  • 10: This can only be gotten before getting Richard's Golden Leaves, while the Castle Gate is still blocking your path. Go up to the gate, and Richard will show up, complaining about your lack of progress. Photo Mouse will show up and take a picture of you giving a peace sign and Richard holding up a sword (so... why can't he get his own Golden Leaves?).
  • 11: This can be gotten after taking the Ghost back to his grave. Go up to the grave again, and Photo Mouse will appear and take a picture of you leaning on the grave. When it develops, the Ghost is right there beside you...
  • 12: This can be gotten after defeating L-7: Eagle's Tower. Go east of the Cucco Addict's house to find a bridge. Cross the bridge, then come back, and Photo Mouse will show up to take a picture. He tries to back up to get a better shot, and ends up falling off the bridge. He takes the picture as he's falling, so all you see is his feet and you looking over the bridge and yelling at him, probably telling him that he'll be okay (after all, if you fall down a bottomless pit, you just lose a heart, so that's probably the same for everyone, right?).

The Trading Sequence

This was the first Trading Sequence in a Zelda game. In case you're accessing this guide just to find out where to go next in this sequence, here it is.

  • Yoshi Doll: You'll get this in the Trendy Game pretty easily, since it doesn't move. Give it to the mother in the northern part of Mabe Village.
  • Ribbon: Given to you in exchange for the Yoshi Doll. Give it to the tiny Chomp in the side house of Madam Meow-Meow's house.
  • Dog Food: Given to you in exchange for the Ribbon. Give it to the crocodile living down on Toronbo Shores.
  • Bananas: Given to you in exchange for the Dog Food. You need this to advance in the plot, so give these to the monkey near Richard's Castle.
  • Stick: Left by a monkey after they build a bridge for you because you gave them the Bananas. Give it to Tarin, who's standing near a tree with a beehive (east of Mabe Village) after clearing L-3: Key Cavern.
  • Honeycomb: Knocked off of a tree by Tarin after you give him the Stick. Give it to the bear chef in Animal Village.
  • Pineapple: Given to you in exchange for the Honeycomb. Give it to Papahl in Tal Tal Heights.
  • Hibiscus: Given to you in exchange for the Pineapple. Give this to the goat in Animal Village.
  • Letter: Given to you in exchange for the Hibiscus. Give it to Mr. Write, who live northwest of the Mysterious Woods.
  • Broom: Given to you in exchange for the Letter. Give it to Grandma Ulrira, who can either be found in southern Mabe Village (before L-5: Catfish's Maw) or northeast Animal Village (after L-5: Catfish's Maw).
  • Fishing Hook: Given to you in exchange for the Broom. Give it to the fisherman who's fishing underneath the bridge west of Animal Village and south of L-5: Catfish's Maw.
  • Necklace: Caught by the fisherman after giving him the Fishing Hook. Give it to the mermaid residing west of L-5: Catfish's Maw.
  • Mermaid Scale: Given to you in exchange for the Necklace. Place this in the Mermaid Statue west of Animal Village to gain access to the cavern holding the Magnifying Glass, finishing the Trading Sequence.

Partners

Partners are characters that follow you around help you advance in the plot. None of them are permanent, but each is important in his or her own way.

  • Bow-Wow: A Chain Chomp (like in Mario) that has been captured by the Moblins. After saving him, you enlist his help to get into L-2: Bottle Grotto before returning him to his owner, Madam Meow-Meow. This is probably the most useful partner in the game, as he eats enemies whole faster than you can defeat them with your sword. Unfortunately, you only have him until after you beat L-2: Bottle Grotto, and then you have to return him before you can continue. If you don't, Kiki the monkey will never build the bridge to Richard's Castle so that you can get his Golden Leaves. After you give him back, you can get a picture of him if you're playing the DX version.
  • Marin: Aw, how cute - Link and Marin are on a date! ...Kinda sorta not really. Marin is used primarily for waking up the walrus in front of Yarna Desert so that you can get the Angler Key. However, she's also used for some fun - in the Trendy Game, if you pay 10 rupees to let her play, she'll pick up the game owner! Then he'll kick you out, because he doesn't like pros in his shop. In the DX version, she also gives you the opportunity to get 3 pictures that you can only get when she's with you. Besides this, she doesn't do much. You'll find her down on Toronbo Shores after visiting Animal Village for the first time and giving the bear chef the Honeycomb from the Trading Sequence, and she'll stay with you until she wakes up the walrus.
  • Ghost: More annoying than anything, and not really useful at all, except to gain a Secret Seashell and push the plot forward. After you beat L-4: Angler's Tunnel, he'll show up and follow you around until you take him to his house. He will not allow you to enter any dungeon, so don't even try to get into L-5: Catfish's Maw until he's done. After you take him to his house just east of Toronbo Shores, he'll want you to take him back to his grave. It's just south of Crazy Tracy's place. Once he's there, he'll leave you alone, and you'll be free to go into L-5: Catfish's Maw. Also, after he's settled into his grave, you can get a picture with him if you're playing the DX version.
  • Flying Rooster: This guy's pretty cool. After reviving him with the Frog's Song of Soul (after L-6: Face Shrine), he'll follow you around, and you can use the Power Bracelet to grab onto him. When you do this, he'll start flying, granting you safety from enemies and large pits. This is more fun than anything, since you only need him for one part so that you can get the Bird Key. After you clear L-7: Eagle's Tower, he'll go to live with the Cucco addict on top of Tal Tal Heights. No picture here, DXers - sorry.

The Select Trick

This trick is one of the only reasons to have the non-DX version. Even then, it's more for goofing around and finishing dungeons without actually going through them.

In the non-DX version, go to the edge of a screen. Then, press over like you're going into the next screen, and press Select at the same time. Doing so will warp you to the other end of the next screen! Here's a visual using L-6: Face Shrine for clarity:

selecttrick.png

By doing this, you can bypass entire dungeons by warping to the hidden item, then warping to the boss. As long as you know the maps well (and since they're posted here by yours truly, you can use those as a reference), you can beat Link's Awakening in half the time (or less). Also, you can get the Magic Rod before you get your first sword! This is a lot of fun, since it gives you more chances to use the item besides for just L-8: Turtle Rock.

PLEASE NOTE that this glitch can lead you to a place where you cannot escape if you use it in an incorrect place. Use with caution. As far as I know, it won't mess up your save file, so you probably don't have to worry about that, but again, experiment with caution.
