Preface

A note about this walkthrough – this is a Completionist Guide. By using this guide, you will get every chest in every dungeon, plus every Secret Seashell and Piece of Heart. This is not a Speed Walkthrough.

When collecting Pieces of Heart, Secret Seashells, or Golden Leaves, I will have written the number of how many you should have at this point. For example, when you get your seventh Heart Piece, I will write "Piece of Heart (7)". This walkthrough contains a complete guide to complete this game quickly and get everything easily and is based off of the DX version (the Color Dungeon and the Photos are also included). In the non-DX version, everything is exactly the same, save for a few chests in the later dungeons that have changed, and that Stone Beaks are called Stone Slabs.

I made up a lot of the names for the enemies. Just play along.

This walkthrough contains some optional HINTS, which can be used to make the game a bit easier. It also contains some ETHICS ALERTS, which are merely humorous side comments to add some comedy to this guide.

The maps are based off of the DX version, which, as mentioned before, have some slightly different items in different chests for some of the dungeons. However, since I lead you to all of the chests anyway, you will still get most of the items if you are not playing the DX version. The maps do NOT show all of the enemies - only the basic layout, the items, the mini-bosses, the bosses, and blocks/statues/torches. These are meant as supplements for my guide.

Also, the maps were made by me, and they took a long time. Feel free to use them, but do not claim them as your own. Because they're not, and you know it.

Onward.

About Link's Awakening

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening was the fourth game in the Zelda series, and the first to be released on a portable system. It was originally released for the black and white Game Boy in 1993. A colorized version (Link's Awakening DX) was released for the Game Boy Color in 1998, which featured a new dungeon and a photograph mode, in which a mouse took pictures of Link that the player could print out using a Game Boy Printer.

This was the first Zelda game that allowed the player to save from wherever Link last entered instead of starting from a fixed location. Also first appearing in Link's Awakening were fishing, companions that followed you around the overworld, different songs to be learned on your Ocarina, the ever-popular Trading Sequence, item collecting (Secret Seashells in this game - later games had Golden Skulltulas, Fairies, and other items), and two new items: the Roc's Feather and the Magnifying Lens (which became the Lens of Truth in later games).

There was no Magic Meter in Link's Awakening, which was different from the two games preceding it (Link to the Past and Adventure of Link). Because of this, the Magic Powder, which used the Magic Meter in Link to the Past, now had a limited supply like bombs or arrows.

The Roc's Feather allowed Link to jump, which opened the Zelda series back up to side-scrolling capabilities (this was in Adventure of Link, as was jumping, but was set aside for A Link to the Past).

Link's Awakening was also the first game to have Link hold two items simultaneously, neither of which had to be the sword or the shield. For example, Link could equip his Pegasus Boots and his Roc's Feather, then use them together to perform a running jump. However, this function was only continued in Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, and, to a lesser extent, Twilight Princess.

Finally, another feature that first appeared in Link's Awakening was using your shield: in the first three Zelda games, the shield was automatically used unless another item was being used, but in Link's Awakening, the shield had to be used by pressing a button. This has continued in most Zelda games following this one.

The Story

Link defeated Ganon. Now everyone is afraid that peace will not last. Link, being the hero that he is, decides to leave, because he doesn't want to hear it. As he's floating around on his boat, a storm erupts and lighting hits the boat. Link is washed ashore on the beach of a strange island, where a girl takes him back to his house and helps him recover.

Walkthrough

I – To The Tail Cave

The first thing you'll do is wake up. After Marin tells you who she is and where you are (Koholint Island, specifically in Mabe Village), hop out of bed and talk to Tarin (the man that strongly resembles Mario) to get the L-1 Shield. This will protect you against rocks, arrows, and other enemies - not beams or fire, though. Now leave the house and go left 2 screens, and down 2 screens to end up on the Toronbo Shores. Go down two more screens (yes, you can jump down the ledges), and right 1 screen. You will see some octoroks on the way, but you can't hurt them with your shield, so just avoid them - they can shoot rocks at you. In the screen where you end up, you will see 3 urchins - one by itself and two next to each other, blocking a path. Urchins don't do anything besides look around and be pointy. Holding your shield, push one of them down enough so that you can get past, and go right one screen. You will see 2 urchins again, so push one of them aside and sneak down a screen before the octorok comes after you.

Look! Your L-1 Sword! Go for it! Right before you get to it, an owl will come and tell you what has happened to Koholint Island. You apparently can't leave until you awaken the Wind Fish. Now that you have a weapon, you can kill all the octoroks and urchins you can find to get some money (they will all die with only one hit from your sword). Head back up to Koholint, basically going the way you came (unfortunately, you cannot jump UP the ledges). Go up a screen from where the two boys are playing catch - you'll notice a well. Go to the ledge above it, slice the bushes and fall into it to find a Piece of Heart (1). Once you get out, go right a few screens to find a screen full of grass and bushes. Slice them all up to get some extra rupees and a Secret Seashell (1).

TRICK: If you hold down your sword button, and wait until it starts flashing before you release, you'll do a Spin Attack - this does twice as much damage than a regular sword slice. Holding down the sword button will also keep you facing the same direction for better strafing.

TRICK: Now that you can kill enemies, once in a while, they will drop a Guardian Acorn or a Piece of Power. Both will only last for as long as you don't enter/leave a house or dungeon, or until you get hit a certain number of times. Guardian Acorns will double your defense, which is ideal for any situation. When I say how much something hurts, if you have a Guardian Acorn, it will be half of that (only down to half a heart, though sometimes you don't get hurt at all). Pieces of Power will double your sword power and fill it with explosive energy - any enemy you slice will go flying and explode. Know that when I say how many hits an enemy takes to die, I'm saying without a Piece of Power – with one, the amount of hits is halved. Also, with a Piece of Power, you move faster. Don't get reckless. Note that you can only have ONE of them at a time – if both of them show up, whichever one you get last will be the one you get.

TRICK: If you hit a Cucco (chicken) numerous times, its buddies will come attack you in defense of their friend, which will only stop if you move to a different screen. Attacking the other Cuccos will not do anything. If you hit a dog, it will jump attack you, then leave you alone unless you attack it again.

Once you have 10 (or more) rupees, go down a screen to the Trendy Game. In here, pay 10 rupees to play the game. The trick to winning this game is to position the claw in the upper left corner of the conveyer belt using the B button, and then tap A once the item you desire is between the lower right and upper right corners. First, go for both of the rupees - each will get you 30 rupees, giving you a total of a 40 rupee profit. After those, get the bag to get the Magic Powder and bypass a sidequest to get it. Then grab the Yoshi Doll from the center. The shield is the same one you have - don't get it. Hearts you can get for free outside - don't bother. Once you've cleared him out, go outside and back in to continue winning rupees (and one more Magic Powder bag so that you have 20 sprinkles instead of 10 - 20's the max at this point). Once you have over 200 rupees, leave this place.

Go left 2 screens and up 3 screens to find a guy fishing at a pond. He'll ask if you want to go fishing for 10 rupees - do it. Hold right as you press one of the A or B buttons to cast - it will be halfway across the pond. You'll probably pick up a runt - catch it by rapidly pressing the A or B button (or rolling your thumb back and forth over both of them), and you'll get 5 rupees. So do it again. Once the bobber is in the water, press one of the buttons until it's almost next to the rod, and let it fall. One of two things will happen - you'll get another runt worth 5 rupees, or you'll get a lunker worth 20 rupees, and the fish (somehow) has a Piece of Heart (2) inside of it. After you catch that lunker, you can either leave or try to catch the other lunker for another 20 rupee prize. By holding left when you cast, it'll end up on the far end of the pond, where a runt and a lunker are. Hopefully you'll only get the lunker, but if you get the runt, go for the lunker again. Once you're done, say "No Thanks" when he asks to try again.

Go down 2 screens, right 2 screens, and up 1 screen to find yourself at the shop. THIS is why you spent all that time at the Trendy Shop. Buy a Deluxe Shovel, then go out and back in and get as many Bombs as you can (the max at this point is 30). Neither of these are necessary at this time, but they help you get more stuff.

TRICK: After your rupees start to decrease, press A+B+Start+Select to Save and Quit. When you start your game again, you'll be back in the shop with more rupees than you should (it saves how many rupees you have WHEN YOU RESET, not how many you should've lost). This is only really practical when you buy the shovel and the Bow.

TRICK: You can steal stuff. Go behind the guy until he looks at you, then run for the door. If he catches you, you have to put it back. If he doesn't, you get a free item. Unfortunately, there is a price - everyone will start calling you "THIEF" - even the owl. You cannot get rid of this - it stays with you until the end. Also, if you EVER go back in the shop, the shop keeper will kill you. Literally. And you don't want any deaths, do you? Of course not. Then again, this is how to get one of the DX Pictures, so if you want to complete your album AND get a free item, meet the Photography Mouse first, then go back to the store, steal the bow, and NEVER RETURN.

ETHICS ALERT: Stealing is wrong, kids. Don't do it in real life.

Okay, so you have a Shovel and some Bombs (if you did the Trick 1, you should have 30). Go up a screen and left a screen and enter the house. Talk to the mother holding the child and agree with give her your Yoshi Doll. She'll give you a Bow. Don't put it on, lest more people think that Link is a girl (just kidding - you can't put it on). Now go down 2 and left 2 to be at BowWow's house (no, he can't hurt you). Go into the tiny shed and talk to the tiny chomp. Give her your bow in exchange for some Dog Food. Yummy. Now dig in the lower right corner of the dog house for a Secret Seashell (2).

Now you're done in Mabe Village, so go left 1 and up 2 to enter the Mysterious Wood. This place is meant to be a place for a side quest to get a Magic Mushroom so that you can get the resident Witch to turn it into Magic Powder, but you already have that. Much less hassle. Okay, once the owl's done telling you more about why you're here, go up 1 to find Moblins. These guys take 2 hits from your sword to die, and they shoot arrows, so keep that in mind. Now go right 1, up 1, and right 1, and enter the cave. You'll see a chest surrounded by tree shoots and holes. The cracked floors will cave in if you stay on them long enough. You may also notice some white dots in the holes - these are Keese (bats). They'll fly around when you get close to them, so get ready to slice 'em up. Anyway, you can shatter the tree shoots and then get to the chest, which contains 50 rupees. Now leave the cave - you can't get anything else in here at this time, and there's no point in getting to the other side (where the Magic Mushroom once was). Go left 1 and up 1 to find a raccoon. This little pest will make it impossible for you to go up another screen - he'll just warp you to a different part of the Mysterious Wood. So, take out your Magic Powder and sprinkle him - he'll spin around, explode, and become Tarin, who seems to be suffering from a mild case of amnesia.

ETHICS ALERT: This happened to Tarin because he ate a toadstool. Kids, don't do shrooms. I don't care what Mario says.

TRICK: You can change his spinning path by chopping down bushes. It doesn't matter, but it's interesting.

Once Tarin is back to normal, go up 1 screen to find another chest containing the Tail Key. Once you get it, the owl will appear again and talk some more. Once he shuts up, go back to Mabe Village and go south back to the Toronbo Shores. Go down 2 and right 3 screens to reach a house surrounded by banana trees. Talk to the alligator and exchange your Dog Food for his Bananas. I think you got the better end of the bargain. Now make your way back to the entrance of Toronbo shores and go right 3 screens. Go back left one screen through the lower passageway, down one screen, and right one screen to find yourself at the Tail Cave. (If you don't have the Tail Key, you can go up to the keyhole and see that they said "Tale" instead of "Tail". It doesn't matter.) Push the Keyhole and go inside.

II – Level 1: Tail Cave

l1tailcavexq3.png

Go left 1 screen to see some Beetles. You can kill them with bombs, but it's much easier to just use your sword to knock them into the convenient holes. By doing this, you get a Small Key, which will open 1 locked door or block. Go left 1 screen to find a chest with the Compass inside - this will tell you where the chests in the dungeon are, and it will alert you when there's a key in a room when you enter it. There are 4 Zols (blobs) guarding it. One hit with your sword will kill them. Collect the Compass and go right 2 screens (knocking the Beetles into the holes again) and go up 1 screen. You'll notice a little musical motif - this is the compass telling you that there's a key in this room. Here there are 2 Gels (one hit each - they can't hurt you, they only attach themselves to you and make you slower and unable to attack, but they jump off after a while) and another Beetle near a hole. Kill the Gels and knock the Beetle in, then step on the floor switch to make a chest appear with a Small Key inside. Go right 1 screen and kill both Keese and both Stalfos (skeletons) to make a chest appear with the Map, which is… a map. If you look at the map, you'll notice that it looks like a big worm. Go up through the spinning door (these only go one way) and left 1 screen to find a Mini-Moldorm (2 hits) and two Spineys (can't be killed with your current equipment) guarding a chest with yet another Small Key. Go left 1 screen again to find another Mini-Moldorm. Defeat him to reveal a chest with 20 rupees inside. Now, notice the left wall has a strange spot. Bomb it, and inside, there is a chest with a Secret Seashell (3).

TRICK: In this game, your Bombs won't hurt you when they explode. Any other bomb will, but not yours. Not sure why.

Now go right 1 screen and up 1 screen. There's a Keese and a Floor Trap (invincible). Kill the Keese, then move the square block up to stop the Floor Trap from hurting you. Go up 1 screen, using one of your Small Keys, and then go right 1 screen. There are 2 Spinys and 2 Gels here. Maneuver around them (you can kill the Gels if you want) to get to the upper path, and go left 1 screen. In this room, there is a Spiny, an Owl Statue (which you can't read, because there's a piece missing), and a lone square block. Move the block right to open the door and go inside. Here there are 2 Spine Beetles which will run towards you if you're aligned with them. Hold up your shield so that when they run into you, they flip over - this exposes their unarmored bodies, and by hitting them twice, they die. When both are dead, a staircase will appear - go down it. There are 2 Goombas (1 hit), so kill them and continue to the next screen, where there's another Goomba to kill. Then go up the ladder to a different part of the dungeon. Go up 1 screen to see a Flying Heart. These will recover a couple of hearts, but you can't get at it because Link can't jump. So go up 1 more screen, where there are 2 Floor Traps and a chest. Get close until the Floor Traps get triggered - once they start moving back, get to the chest and open it to get the Roc's Feather, which allows Link to jump (BLASPHEMY!). Jump over the Floor Trap path, then go down 2 screens (picking up the Flying Heart if need be), and head back across the underground path.

TRICK: Now that you have the Roc's Feather, you can jump on the Goombas to kill them. You'll get a heart each time you jump on one, no matter what. If you don't need the hearts, you can kill them for money or just jump on the platforms above them and avoid them completely.

Now you're back in the Spine Beetle room. Go right 1 and down 2 (you can now jump over the holes using Roc's Feather - only one space at a time, though) screens, then right 2 screens (taking the upper path), and up 1 screen. Jump over the pit and push the locked block to destroy it using a Small Key. Go left one screen and get the Nightmare's Key, which will open the door to the Nightmare's Lair (where the boss is). Go right 1, down 1, left 1, and right 1 (using the lower path), then use your last Small Key to open the door to the right. Go right to find a Stalfos and 2 Spinys. If you go up a room, you'll see 3 Card Creatures, which will only be destroyed when they all stop on the same symbol. Hitting them with your sword, shield, or any other weapon will make them stop on one symbol. Once you get all 3 to match, they will explode and leave a chest behind containing the Stone Beak, which can be used by touching an Owl Statue in the dungeon to get a hint (like you need it - you're using this guide).

TRICK: If the Card Creatures all stop on Hearts, they will each leave a heart. If they all stop on Diamonds, they'll each leave a rupee. Clubs and Spades will leave nothing.

Now go down 1 screen, hop over the hole, and go right one screen to find yourself in the presence of the mini-boss. This weird little... thing... will roll a giant spikey pillar at you. Jump over it and keep slicing him. 8 hits will kill him. Inside of him is a Small Fairy, which will heal you. It will also create a Warp which will warp you to the beginning of the dungeon. Now that you're fully healed, run around the dungeon until you either get a Guardian Acorn or a Piece of Power (your preference - I recommend the Piece of Power). The only room you haven't been in yet (if you've followed this guide word for word) is a room with 4 Keese in it. Once you have one or the other, come back to this room and go up 1 screen. This room has 4 Floor Traps (be careful) and a staircase. Don't worry about the staircase - it's only used for coming back up if you fall in the Boss Arena, which is up 1 screen. So, go up 1 screen, using your Nightmare's Key to open the door. Inside is...

Moldorm

Moldorm is kind of a pain, especially since you only have 3 Hearts. There are holes all over, and if you fall down, you have to come back up the stairs and go back into the Arena, where Moldorm has miraculously recovered all of his health. So don't fall down. He just kinda moves around, but every time you get hit, you lose an entire heart. If you fall after getting hit, go back into the dungeon and heal yourself and, if you've lost your Piece of Power or Guardian Acorn, go get another one. If you think you're going to die, just jump into a hole and go heal yourself and come back. Using your Roc's Feather or your shield (the shield makes it easier to not get hurt, since it will block him), maneuver around (or over, if you can) Moldorm and slice the last segment of him. He'll start going faster, then go back to normal. After 3 hits, he'll stay speed up, so watch out. After 4 hits, he's dead. He'll explode, segment by segment, until his head explodes into a Heart Container. Pick it up to increase your Life Bar to 4 Hearts, then go up a screen and recieve the Full Moon Cello, the first of the 8 Instruments of the Sirens that can be used to wake the Wind Fish. Once you get the instrument, you will be warped outside of the Tail Cave, and a little message will appear telling you where to go next.

III – To The Bottle Grotto

Now you're done with your first dungeon! Excited? I didn't think so. You still have 7 more dungeons to go, after all. Okay. Go left 1 screen, and the owl will appear telling you what I've already told you. Once he's done jabbering at you, go back to Mabe Village. Nothing new to do here, except that BowWow was stolen by the Moblins. You, of course, are an accomplished hero - you get to go save him. So go north, into the Mysterious Wood.

From the first screen in the Mysterious Woods, go up 2, right 2, and up 1 screen. Here you'll encounter something new - a Moblin Knight. He's equipped with a sword and a shield. Try to position your self above and to the right/left of him so that he's facing left/right. Then you can easily hit him with your sword twice and kill him. Go north one more screen to find something else new - Zols that, when hit, split into Gels. No problem. Go right two screens and jump over the hole to get a Piece of Heart (3), then jump up to the next screen. Go right a screen and see the the Moblin Hideout, which is your next destination.

Photo 1: IF YOU HAVE THE DX VERSION, don't go in yet. Go right another 2 screens to the Photo Shop and go inside. There, talk to the Photo Mouse, who wants to take your picture. You can either say "Yes" and do a nice, happy pose ("Here Stands A Brave Man"), or say "No" until he pushes you into the wall and you get your picture taken anyway of you dizzy and collapsed ("Game Over"). If you say "Yes" anytime in this, you will do the nice, happy pose. Do whichever you prefer. Or, better yet, Save, then do one, reset, and do the other. See which one you like better. Once you're done here, the Photo Mouse will randomly show up and take pictures of you (I'll help you find them). Now leave and go back to the Moblin Hideout.

Once inside the Moblin Hideout, You'll encounter a Moblin Knight. Kill him, then go up to the next room, which houses 4 Moblins. If you're lucky, one of these Moblins will drop a Guardian Acorn or a Piece of Power. Go right to the next room to find the Moblin Boss. Stand where you are with your shield out. He'll shoot some arrows, which will bounce off your shield. When he pounds his chest, move up or down. He'll charge, and if you moved, he'll ram into the wall, stunning him. Now you can hit him with your sword once or twice before he gets up and starts shooting you again. 8 hits and he's down. From there, go right another screen and touch the rock that's holding BowWow to save him. Now you have him as a companion! He'll eat any enemy that he gets to. This makes me wonder how he got captured by the Moblins in the first place - I mean, after all, he can eat them.

Anyway, with BowWow in hand, it's time to head to Gopanga Swamp. Go out of the Moblin Hideout and go left 1, down 1, left 4, up 1, and right 1 screen. In this screen, you'll see a Like Like. These blobs of Jell-O will consume your shield if they catch you and take 3 hits to kill. BowWow will probably eat it, but be careful anyway. Go right one more to Gopanga Swamp. This area contains Pirahnas (1 hit) that jump out of the water from time to time - that's when they're vulnerable. There are also Swamp Flowers, which cannot be destroyed by anything you currently have. However, BowWow thinks they taste great, so he'll eat them for you. So, go up 1, right 1 (this screen has a Big Swamp Flower - they shoot fireballs that your shield can't protect against), down 1 (using the path furthest to the right), down 1, and right 1 for a chest containing 50 rupees. Now go left 1, up 1, and right 1 to find the Bottle Grotto, guarded by Swamp Flowers. Have BowWow eat a few (technically, he only needs to eat one), then go inside.

IV – Level 2: Bottle Grotto

l2bottlegrottoig3.png

From the entrance, go up one screen and light the torches using your Magic Powder (careful of the Spiny). The door to your right will open, so go through it. The next screen has two kinds of Stalfos. One will try to jump on top of you, and the other is the kind you've encountered before. When the Stalfos tries to jump on you, he'll stop in midair - hold your sword upwards, and he'll land on it. Takes 2 hits. Then kill the other one for a Small Key. Now go left 2 screens (if you need to light the torches again, go ahead - you should have plenty of Magic Powder), using your small key to open the locked door. In this next room, there are 4 Floor Traps, 2 Keese, and 2 Torches. Luckily, there aren't any holes, so you probably won't need to use your Magic Powder. Just kill the Keese by following their eyes, and then go up 1 screen. In this room, there are two torches (light them to see the holes) and a Beetle. The Beetle will follow you. Lure him to either one far side of the room or the other, then run back to the center and jump over, and knock the Beetle in the hole. The chest in here contains the Stone Beak (or the Map, if you're playing the non-DX version). Now go back to where you fought the Stalfos (down 1, right 2) and go right another 2 screens, ignoring the crystal switch for now. In this room, you'll see two Shy Guys on the other side of some blocks. Their masks protect them, but their backs are weak. They also mimic exactly what you do. Slice at them until they're both right next to the wall, then turn around (they'll turn around, too) and use a Spin Attack to defeat them both. A Small Key will fall right where you are, so pick it up and go left 2 screens. Use your newfound key to go down. In this room, there are is another Shy Guy on the opposite side of some jars. Defeat him by going next to him, turning around, and Spin Attacking, and a chest will appear with the Compass inside.

Go up 1 and right 1 screen to the Crystal Switch. Hit it with your sword, and the barriers will sink into the ground, so you can go down. Here, there's a Skull Knight (much like the Moblin Knights) - kill it, then hit the Crystal Switch with your sword (yes, it goes beyond the barriers) to lower the barriers so that you can access the chest with a Small Key inside. Now go right 1 screen. Make your way to the floor switch by jumping to the places where the barriers are down (there's also a Flying Magic Powder which will refill your supply), step on it, and a chest will appear with another Small Key. Make your way to the top and go up 1 screen (don't hit the Crystal Switch - you don't need to), right 1 (2 Spine Beetles), and up 1 screen (using one of your keys). Here there are two Keese, a Spiny, and two square blocks. Move the blocks together to create a staircase. Go down and use your Roc's Feather to navigate across the Spike Pits and moving platforms, up the other ladder. Once you're out of the catacombs, go all the way to your left and light the torch (watch out for the Spiny). You'll see a single platform with a Flying Heart. Grab it, avoid (or kill) the Keese, and go up through the Revolving door to the mini-boss. This Cyclops will throw bombs at you and come running at you, pick you up, and throw you (more than likely onto one of the cracked floor tiles). So, wait until he throws a bomb. Once the explosion's done, run up and smack him with your sword. 8 hits will kill him, revealing a Warp and a Small Fairy. Go right 1 screen to find 2 Keese and a Flying Heart. Grab the heart if you need it, kill the Keese (you can swing your sword in midair), and go up one room. This is one of the stupidest rooms in the whole level. There are 3 Keese and a Black Hole. The Black Hole will spontaneously start buzzing, sucking you and the Keese towards it. Walk away from it, letting it suck in the Keese. Now the Keese are gone. You can either wait until it starts sucking again and jump towards it, attacking with your sword in midair, and hope to hit it, or try your luck at making it to the chest. If it sucks you in, you'll be warped back to the beginning of the level (good thing you got the Warp from the mini-boss, huh?), or you might just fall into a hole. Either way, the chest contains the Map (Stone Slab for you non-DXers). If you look at it, it looks like a jar. Suppose it could pass for a bottle... whatever.

Make your way up a screen, kill the Keese, open the chest with 20 rupees inside (don't grab the Flying Magic Powder yet unless you're running low, which you shouldn't be), equip your Magic Powder and your Sword, and then go left a screen using another key. In this room, there are two Ghosts which can't be killed while it's dark, but will flinch and teleport when you slice them. Slice them away until you light a torch, and then slice at the ghosts to kill them. One hit for each. A chest will appear with the Power Bracelet L-1 inside. Now you can pick up stones and pots, which is great. Go right (you can get the Magic Powder now) 2 screens (use the upper path). There's a Crystal Switch. Stand next to it and hit it, then drop down to the lowered barrier and hit it again. Then drop down again and get the chest, which has yet another Small Key. Go near the Switch again and hit it, but this time, drop off on the right side of the raised barriers you're on to go right 1 screen. There's a Gel and a Beetle near you. Kill the Gel, then wait until the Beetle comes near you and knock it into the hole. Go right 1 screen (if you hit the crystal switch while killing the Stalfos and 4 Keese, don't worry about it - it doesn't matter anymore) and down 1 screen. Here there are 3 enemies - A Skull Warrior, a Keese, and a Pols Voice. The Skull Warrior is much like the Moblins - shoots arrows and takes 2 hits to kill. The Pols Voice can be defeated by bombs, music (which you don't have access to), or a pot being thrown at it. Anyway, these enemies need to be defeated in this exact order: Pols Voice, Keese, Skull Warrior. So what you need to do is push one of the square blocks down, and one to the right/left, then pick up a pot and throw it at the Pols Voice. Or a bomb, but the pot didn't cost you money. Then kill the Keese, and lastly the Skull Warrior, to make a chest appear with the Nightmare's Key inside. Now, go up 1 and right 1 screen, using a key to get through the door. Pick up a pot and kill the Pols Voice, kill the Zol (and its Gels), then pick up another pot and kill the other Pols Voice. A staircase will appear.

TRICK: One of the pots in the lowest row in this room holds a Small Fairy if you need it.

Try to look around the dungeon for a Piece of Power or a Guardian Acorn if you want, then go down the staircase that appeared. Once down, stand on the platform, and it will go down. Then go left to the next screen, pick up the pot, and stand on the next one (needs more weight to go down - it makes a face, but won't hurt you). Once you resurface, go to the bottom of the room and jump up over the pits (there are barriers on the sides of the platforms) to get to the Nightmare's Lair.

Evil Genie

This guy actually looks more like a clown than a genie. Don't expect something from Gauntlet Legends or Aladdin for him. The first thing he'll do is come out of his bottle and throw 8 fireballs at you. Avoid them by running back and forth across the bottom of the room. Once he goes back into his bottle, hit it with your sword, pick it up with your Power Bracelet, and throw it against a wall. Then he'll come out to barrage you with fire again. After you throw the bottle against the wall 3 times, it'll break, and he'll cry about you breaking his bottle (sounds like a baby, doesn't he?). Switch your Power Bracelet for your Roc's Feather and attack him. He'll split into two swirling versions. Run to one of the lower corners. When he comes back together, he'll throw a fireball at you and proceed towards you. Jump over the fireball, and when he's close enough, hit him with your sword. 8 hits will down this guy, and then you can collect your Heart Container (5 Hearts now), go left, and get the Conch Horn. 2 instruments down, 6 to go. You'll be warped outside again with a message on where to go next, but who cares - I'll tell you where to go.

V – To The Key Cavern

Once you're outside Bottle Grotto, go back in and get the chest with 50 rupees inside. Then leave and go right 1 (using your Power Bracelet for the rocks), down 1, left 1, down 1, and right 1. Pick up the rock and go into Crazy Tracy's House (no, I don't know if those are cats or rats - they're awfully big rats, but cats don't really have tails like that). Crazy Tracy will offer to sell you a "secret" that will pump you up. This "secret" is Secret Medicine, which will refill all of your hearts if they're all depleted. You probably won't need it if you're following this guide, but it's always good to have insurance. Price is an odd thing - it'll either be 28 rupees or 42 rupees. It alternates depending on what file you have. If you make a file that has it as 42, the next file will have it for 28, and the next file will be 42. It doesn't matter which slot the file's on - just how many files you've made before this one. I don't even know if the first one you make is 28 or 42. Hopefully you'll have it for 28, but 42's not bad at all for such an item. If you ever use it up, just come back here and buy another. Once you leave, go left 3 and down 1 screen, where the Moblin Knight and his pal are (BowWow will eat them both for you, if you let him). You'll also notice (if you haven't already) a lone rock. Under the rock is a staircase leading to a strange well with a pillar on either side. Sprinkle some Magic Powder into the well to make a bipolar bat-like thing appear, who claims he will curse you. Be afraid. Or not. First, he'll offer to increase your Magic Powder supply. Say no - you won't use it very often anyway. Then he'll offer to increase your bomb capacity. Say yes - he'll fry you, and somehow, you can now carry 60 bombs instead of 30. He also fills your supply, so you just got a lot of free bombs! You'll need 'em for the next dungeon. Then the weird thing disappears. Okay. Let's get out of here.

When you resurface... the rock is back! What the heck? Anyway, go down 1 screen and into the cave again. Now you should go further in. Go up 1 (2 Zols are hiding in the ground) and left 1. Use your Power Bracelet to lift the skulls and throw them away so that you can get to a Piece of Heart (4), completing another Heart Container (6 now). Go back the way you came out of the cave and go left 1 and down 1 screen. A Moblin, 2 Zols, and a rock are all that stand between you and a chest with a Secret Seashell (4) inside. Now you can give BowWow back (go left 1, down 3, and right 1 if you've forgotten). Go into the house and talk to Madam Meow-Meow to return him and get a kiss from her, which refills all of your hearts (if you've lost any).

TRICK: Now that you have the Power Bracelet, you can pick up the Cuccos! This doesn’t do anything.

Photo 2: If you have the DX version, go near BowWow after you've given him back to go through a cutscene where you get another picture ("Link Plays With BowWow), wherein BowWow makes you run away (it's pretty safe to say that Link needs a new tunic now).

Photo 3: After BowWow makes Link soil himself, go down a screen to Grandpa Ulrira's house. Go to the window on the right side and push it. Photo Mouse will come running and take a picture of Grandpa Ulrira talking on a phone ("Link Discovers Ulrira's Secret"). If you weren't aware, there are some giant trees with a telephone over them. If you go inside and talk on the phone, Grandpa Ulrira will give you hints that are unnecessary thanks to me. I'm putting Gramps out of a job. Ha ha.

Photo 4: As stated earlier, you can get a picture of yourself stealing. Now would be an okay time to do it, if you really want it, since there's a 980 rupee bow and arrow set that you likely don't have the money for. Photo Mouse won't tell you he took it, but he did. Just remember - if you do, you will be called "THIEF" forever, and you can NEVER go back into the shop if you don't want to die.

Okay, that's over with. Go to the Store (if you're not already there) and go right 1 screen, past the rocks, and up 1 screen into a cave. In here, kill the Zols and move the stones (careful of the cracked floor) to get to the chest with 50 rupees. Now go down 1 and right 1 screen - you are now in Ukaka Prarie. Here you will see two new things - an alter type thing with a sparkling hole, which will act as a warp once you find another one, and a Winged Octorok. Winged Octoroks are just the same as regular ones, except that when you slice at them, they'll hop over you and then try to hit you with a rock. You have to hold out your sword, then advance towards it and either hit it or use a Spin Attack. Now go right again for yet another new enemy - Antlions. These are easily spotted when their eyes appear in holes. When you see these, move. 2 hits can kill them, but often, it's not worth it. Anyway, go up 1 (there's a bombable wall, but don't worry about it yet) and right 1 screen. Here, there's a bombable wall with a Great Fairy inside (who will completely heal you if you need it). There's also a tree with a honeycomb and some bees, but you can't do anything about that yet. Go down 1 screen and bomb the giant cracked rock that looks like a pig skull. Then go right 1 (here you'll meet a Bomber, which look like huge mushrooms with wings. It'll drop bombs on you and fly away when you swing your sword, so ignore it), up 1, right 1 (the lower right hole here holds Spiders, which come out endlessly. 1 hit kills them, but there's no point), down 1, right 1 (these are also Moblins - they just look different), up 1, and right 1 screen. Slice through the bushes to get a Secret Seashell (5). Watch out for the Zora that comes out of the water and shoots fireballs at you. 1 hit will kill them, but you can't reach this one, so whatever. Go left 1 screen and go into the house Seashell Mansion. Go towards the giant wall with circles and a gift will appear since you have 5 Secret Seashells. The gift is... another Secret Seashell (6). Yay. If you had more than 5, you wouldn't have gotten this.

Now leave the Mansion and go down 1, left 1, and down 2 screens to find a rock. Underneath it is another Secret Seashell (7). Now go left 1 screen (take the lower path). You'll see some Bombers - ignore them and go into the cave. In this cave, you'll see a skull. There's a Turtle under it, so watch out - it'll run towards you in a straight line. If you want to beat it, you'll have to lift the skull off, then slice it. Not worth it. Just avoid it. There's also a Zol - kill it if you want. Go left 1 screen and bomb the indent in the left wall (avoiding the 2 Skull Turtles, Keese, and Zol). Jump over the hole and go up the staircase, then go left 1 screen (watch for the Zol), push the stone into the hole, left another screen, around the stone (watch for the Zol), and right 1 screen. There are 2 stones you can push right - push the top one of these right, and then push the stone above it up (watch for another Zol). Then leave the cave through the exit provided. Avoiding the Bombers again, go up a screen. Kill the Flying Octoroks and dig around this area to find yet another Secret Seashell (8). Go back into the cave and go right 1 screen, climb up the stairs, and jump up off the ledge and down the staircase (another Zol here). Go back the way you came to get here (right 2 screens) and out of the cave. Then go right 1, up 3, left 1, down 2, left 1, down 3 (use the path to the right), and left 1 screen. This is Richard's Villa. He used to live in the castle (with his frogs, I guess - I don't get it either). Talk to him, and he'll send you on a quest to recover his 5 Golden Leaves that he left in the castle. Of course, he's got a sword, but he's a wuss, so he's making you do it in order to get the Key to the next level. At first, he says that it's a Golden Leaf, but then, after you agree, he says that there are 5, and you need to get them all. Jerk. Okay, go right 1, up 3, right 1, up 2, right 1, and up 1 to reach the outer wall of the castle. There's a gate, so you'll have to find a different passage.

Photo 5: Go up to the gate, and you'll see Photo Mouse admiring the castle. Richard will come up, saying how impatient he is about your lack of results (...you've only been gone for a minute - what's he expect?), and decide to be in a picture with you. He even shows off his sword while Link does his little peace sign. Richard then claims that he's not afraid, and that he just wants to wait at home. Typical lazy bum.

Go right 2 screens and talk to Kiki the monkey, who calls his friends over to build a bridge for you if you give him your bananas. They'll leave behind a Stick on the bridge, so take it. Unfortunately, you can't use it to hit Richard. Go across the bridge and up 2 and left 1 screen. Slice the bush to find a secret passage. 2 Goombas in the first screen, to spike pits in the second screen. Jump up to the ladder and go up to find yourself inside the Castle Grounds. Go right 1 screen to find a Darknut Knight (just like the Moblin Knights, don't worry), then down 1 screen. Here, there are 6 holes and a Darknut Bomber hiding underground. He'll pop out of a hole, throw a bomb, then go back down. It's kinda like Whack-A-Mole. Use your sword to hit him, since you don't have a fuzzy mallet. 4 hits will kill him, and a Golden Leaf (1) will pop out. Go down 1 screen (pass or kill the Darknut Knights), left 2 screens (another Darknut Knight), and up 1 screen (yet another Darknut Knight). Kill the Darknut Knight, then pick up a rock and throw it at the Crow. It'll fly at you - hit it with your sword twice to kill it, and it will release another Golden Leaf (2). Now go down 1 and right 1 screen and go into the Castle.

Once inside, go left 1 screen and kill the Darknuts (again, same as Moblins) and the Zol (and its Gels) to get a Golden Leaf (3). You'll notice an Antifairy here. It can't be killed with anything that you currently have, so just hold out your shield - it'll bounce off. Go up 1 screen (Darknut and Darknut Knight here) and right 1 screen. Here there is a Darknut, a Keese, and a floor switch - the switch will open the gate, making it easier to leave the castle once you're done. Now go up the stairs, left 1 screen, and up the staircase. Here, there is a Spiny (watch out), plus two engravings of Darknuts. Bomb the left one, and a Darknut Knight will appear. Kill it for a Golden Leaf (4). Almost done! Go right 1 screen and look at the Ball & Chain Trooper. That's where your last Golden Leaf is. Sucks, doesn't it? Anyway, go down one, left one, and out of the castle. You're now on the Terrace of the Castle. Go into the center entrance of this floor, and the door will shut. Pick up a pot and throw it at the door, and it'll open. Get your sword and shield ready - it's time for the Ball & Chain Trooper. Basically, hold up your shield, go up to him, and whack him 8 times to get the last Golden Leaf (5). Not as hard as he looked, was he? Well, go out of the castle, into the left entrance on the Terrace, and find your way back to the first floor entrance (right 1, up 1, left 1, down the staircase, right 1, down the stairs, left 1, down 1, and right 1, then out the door). Once you're outside, go down 2, left 1, down 2, left 1, down 3 (right side), and left 1 screen - back to Richard the Brat.

Give him his stupid Golden Leaves, and he'll get out of the way so that you (of course - no physical labor for Richie over there) can push aside a box and go to a secret path to his field. Go down the stairs that are under the box and take the left path up (2 Zols along the way). Push the stone into the hole, then jump across, kill the Zol, and open the chest for a Secret Seashell (9). Go back down and take the right path up (another Zol here) towards the staircase. Go left, down the stairs, and outside. Using your sword, slice these bushes: down, right, right, right, then go down a screen. Now slice down, down, down, right, right, and go right a screen. Now slice right, down, right, right, right, right, up, right, up, up, up, and go up a screen. Now slice up, up, up, up, up, up, right, right, down, down, left, left, left, up, and go left a screen. Slice this bush and dig to find the Slime Key, which will open the next dungeon. Do a soft reset to Save and Quit so that you don't have to go through the field again. Get out of Richard's Villa and go up 1, left 1, and up 1 screen to find the Keyhole that the Slime Key fits in. Push the keyhole, to open it, and then go up 2, right 1, up 1, left 1, down 1, right 1, down 1, left 1, and down 1 screen (take the left path this time). Jump over the water, go left one screen, jump over more water, go up the stairs to the next screen, and left 1 screen. Kill the Winged Octoroks, then dig the spot in the middle of the four grass squares to find another Secret Seashell (10) (if you accidently sliced the grass, just dig around until you find it). Now go right 1 screen, down the stairs to the next screen, and left 1 screen to the entrance of the Key Cavern.

VI – Level 3: Key Cavern

l3keycavern.png

Right when you get in, the door in front of you will shut. Much like the castle, you have to pick up a pot and throw it at the door to open it, then go up. Here, there’s a Skull Knight, a Gel, and two Ricochet Bombs. These guys, when hit by your sword, will go flying, bouncing all over the room, and then explode. Stay in the doorway and slice the bombs when they get close – there’s a chance that they’ll hit the Gel or the Skull Knight, and there’s less of a chance of you getting hit. Once they’re all defeated, a chest with a Small Key inside will appear. Go up 1 screen. The doors will shut. There’s a chest that guarded by 4 Zols that will pop out of the ground. Kill them and open the chest, and… another Zol will pop out. Wonderful, huh? Go up again, and you’ll see a Gel on the other side of the wall (you can’t get to it yet) and 2 Stalfos. Kill the Stalfos if you want to, then go up another screen. Here, there’s a chest that you can’t get to yet, and a staircase surrounded by 4 Zols. Kill the Zols and go down the staircase.

The minute you appear downstairs, there will be 4 Zols around you. Either use a Spin Attack or get out of the way and kill them, then kill the Gel. Go down, using a key. Here there’s a Skull Warrior, 3 Zols, and another new creature – a Warpenguin. This little guy will warp when you get close, reappear, and shoot something at you (this can be blocked by your shield, but will take off a full heart if it hits you). It can only appear at its original position and wherever it warps to. If you hit it, it will be pushed back by the force – this will affect where it warps to as well. Get rid of the Zols and Skull Warrior first, then go to where the Warpenguin is. He’ll warp somewhere and shoot something at you. Go to where he warped to, and as soon as he warps, go back to where he was originally and slice him as soon as he appears. The conveyor belts might cause some trouble in this, but it shouldn’t be too difficult. Two hits will kill him. A Small Key will drop onto the conveyor belts, so grab it, go up 1 screen, and left 1 screen, using a key. In here, there are 2 Warpenguins that will warp as soon as you enter the room, so hold up your shield. You’ll have to use your Roc’s Feather to jump across the pit, moving against the conveyor belts, to make them warp again so you can hurt them. They’ll do kitty-corner, so keep that in mind. Also be aware that there are 2 Zols (one on each side of the pit), so kill them first. If you need the Flying Heart, get it – otherwise, wait until all of the enemies are dead. Another Small Key will fall on the left side of the pit, on the conveyor belt, so hurry and grab it. Now go right 1 and up 1 screen, using a key again. Here there’s a Stalfos (the kind that jump on you) and a Skull Warrior. Beat them for another Small Key, then hit the Crystal Switch, go down a screen, and back up the staircase (the Zols will be back). Now you can access the chest, which holds the Stone Beak (50 rupees in the non-DX version). Go down 2 screens (killing the enemies along the way) and right 1 screen. In here, there are 2 Keese and a Skull Knight. Kill them and get the chest, which contains the Map (200 rupees in the non-DX version). If you look at it, it looks like a big key and a little key. How quaint. Go left 1 screen, up 2 screens, and down the staircase again (the Zols are back downstairs now, too). Go right 1 screen using your key, and go on the conveyor belt and up the staircase (you can kill the 2 Keese, but don’t bother with the Warpenguin).

Why did I make you go into every one of those rooms, when you only needed to go into the upper one to get the Crystal Switch and the right one to move on? Because this is a Completionist’s Guide. I told you that. Plus, you get experience in fighting things.

You will appear on a podium of sorts. There are a total of 5 Zols hiding underground – kill them all for a Small Key, then go up 1 screen. There are 2 Skull Warriors here – kill them, then bomb the right wall between the torches and go right. Here, you will see another 2 Skull Warriors (kill them), a giant pit (you can’t cross it yet), and a cracked wall going up. Bomb it and go up. There’s a Zol (hiding) and two Stalfos (jumping) in this room, plus a chest that you can’t get to yet. Go up 1 screen. 2 Zols (hiding) and 3 Timed Bombs here. They look like Ricochet Bombs, but instead of bouncing around the room when hit, they’ll start a timer going from 3 to 1, and then explode. They also tend to follow you once they’ve been hit. The key for this is that when they hit 1 and start to shake, hit them with your sword again to knock them back so that they don’t explode near you (a Piece of Power works wonders here). Kill all of the enemies and go left. In this room, there are 3 Zols (hiding) and a Skull Warrior. Kill them, then open the chest for the Compass. Now, from below the chest, go straight left and place a bomb at the wall, then go left. In here, there are 2 Ricochet Bombs. One is right next to you. Hit it, and it’s likely that it’ll bounce around and hit another one, which will bounce around and hit the other one, which will explode. No harm to you, and you get a Small Key for it. Go right 2 rooms (the Timer Bombs are, unfortunately, back), down 2 rooms, left 2 rooms (4 Gels and a Zol, which will split into 2 Gels – a great place to get a Piece of Power or a Guardian Acorn later on), and up one room to find the mini-boss – 2 Dodongo Snakes.

Dodongo Snakes cannot be injured externally – only internally. With Bombs. So get out your Bombs, wait until one of them is in a corner, and throw a bomb at it (after laying a Bomb, press that button again to pick it up – you can hold it forever and never have it explode. In fact, if you pick it up when it’s about to explode, the fuse will reset). It’ll eat it. You can also try your luck with just randomly throwing Bombs and hoping that they’ll eat them (this is why you got the upgrade for your bombs – now you have 60 to waste instead of 30). Once a snake eats 3 Bombs, it will explode, releasing a small fairy. If you for some reason run out of Bombs, go up the stairs in the lower left to leave the room, and go break some pots to find more bombs. It’s unlikely that this will happen, but it’s good to know. Once both are defeated a Warp will appear, but go right 1 screen instead. You’ll see a chest surrounded by blocks. Go as far to the right and down as you can, and push the lower block left and the upper block up to access the chest with the Pegasus Boots inside. When you have your sword equipped with these, you can do a Dash Attack that will do double damage. When combined with a Roc’s Feather, you can do a Running Jump, which will clear up to 3 pits. Anyway, grab the Flying Heart if need be, then Dash through the Crystals, push the block, and go back to the Warp (down 1, left 1, up 1) and use it.

Go right 1 screen and do a Dash Attack while continuing to press right as soon as you’re there. You should manage to hit the Ex-Black Hole (this one will push you away, likely into a pit, unless you hit it in time – with a Dash Attack, you should be able to without a problem). Inside the chest it’s guarding is a Small Key. Go left 1 screen and up 3 screens (killing the Ricochet Bombs and using the left path this time – now you can destroy the crystals). Kill the Gel, then go back down 2 screens (the Ricochet Bombs will be back) and up 2 screens on the right path (kill the Zols), kill the Stalfos, and a chest will appear with 200 rupees inside (Stone Slab in the non-DX version)! Cool, huh? Now go back to the warp (down 3 screens) and use it.

Once you’re back in the Mini-Boss room, go down 1 screen (kill the Zol and Gels) and left 1 screen. There are 2 Zols and 2 Warpenguins in here. Now that you have the Pegasus Boots, you can use a Dash Attack straight at the Warpenguins – you’ll hit them before they can warp out of the way, and the Dash Attack does double damage, so they’ll die with one hit. Defeating them all will secure you a Small Key. Go up through the revolving door to find a Stalfos and 2 Zols that split into Gels. Kill them to make a chest appear on the ledge above you. Go up 1 screen through the revolving door. In here, there are 2 Ricochet Bombs and a Skull Knight. Beat them and get the Flying Bomb to refill your Bomb supply, then go down 1 screen and open the chest for 50 rupees (Map in the non-DX version). Go down 1 and right 3 screens. Remember this huge pit? Now you can jump over it by performing a Running Jump. Use your Pegasus Boots until you’re right next to the pit, then use your Roc’s Feather to jump over. It might take some practice, but once you’re over, go up 1 screen and to another Running Jump to get to the chest with the Nightmare’s Key inside. Now jump off the ledge and go left 1, down 1, and left 1 screen. Get a Piece of Power or Guardian Acorn if you don’t have one yet. Using your keys, unlock the block and take that passageway up 1 (unlock another block), right 1 (another), and down 1 screen (another) and go down the staircase. There’s a Living Block in your way. Dash into it, and it will fall down, securing a path to the right. Here, there’s a staircase with a pit of spikes below it. Do a Running Jump and hold up to grab hold of the ladder. Kill the Pirahna Plant (1 hit) and go down the ladder to the right. 3 Warpenguins surrounded by crystals lurk here. Use your Dash Attack to the left to kill one, then line yourself up with the other two and use a Dash Attack to kill them both. Grab the Flying Heart if you need it, then go left 1 screen. There are 5 Keese and a conveyor belt in here. Kill all the Keese for a Small Key (there is no real purpose for this key – it was originally intended for those who skipped the rooms before and want to see what's inside of them, but you've already been in those rooms, so it doesn't matter), then go up 1 to the Nightmare’s Lair.

Slime Eye

First things first – dash into the wall. Trust me. Slime Eye won’t come down from the ceiling otherwise. Once he’s down, slice him 4 times – you’ll see him start to split apart. After 4 times, use a Dash Attack to break him into 2 separate eyes. Switch your Pegasus Boots for your Roc’s Feather. After slicing one of them, it will leap into the sky and try to come down on top of you. Get out of the way and jump to avoid getting stunned. 5 hits per eye will kill the boss (ideally you will have hit one or both with that splitting Dash Attack), giving you another Heart Container (this makes 7). Then go up and collect the Sea Lily’s Bell. Only 5 more instruments! Yay! Kinda. You’ll then be warped out with a message about a waterfall. Don’t worry about it too much.

VII - To The Angler’s Tunnel

Upon leaving, go right 1 screen to listen to the owl talk again, telling you to go to the desert. But the message said go to a waterfall. Don't get confused - just do what I tell you to do. Go right 1, up 1, left 1, up 2, right 1, down 1, right 1, and up 1 screen - back to the Seashell Mansion. Go inside and collect a present of another Secret Seashell (11). If you don't have 10, you won't get it. Getting 15 won't do anything - just 5, 10, and 20. Okay, now go out and go down 1, left 1, up 1, left 1, down 1, left 1, and up 1 screen. You'll see Tarin looking at the beehive. Talk to him and give him the Stick - he'll whack the beehive a couple of times, and then the bees will come out and chase him, leaving you with the Honeycomb. Don't worry, it's not the cereal - no creepy... animal... thing... is going to chase you shouting "ME WANT HONEYCOMB!" Anyway, go left 1 screen and bomb the cave that's blocked by rocks (watch out for the Antlions) and go inside. There's a Spiny here - avoid it and use your Boots to destroy first crystal, then get out of the way and let the Spiny go around again. Now use your boots on the rest of the crystals and go up. Another Spiny here. Avoid it and go down. Use your boots to destroy the crystal, then move the stone to the left to access the chest with 50 rupees inside. Now use the far right path to go up 1 screen. Go as far right as you can, then go up and bomb the right wall - past it is a Heart Piece (5). Go left, down, and up 1 screen (using the left path). Jump over the Spiny and go down using the leftmost path. Destroy the crystals, avoid the Spiny, and get out of here.

Go down 1, left 2, and down 1. There's a lone tree here - dash into it to make a Secret Seashell (12) fall out. Go up 1, left 1, and up 1 screen to get to the Dream Shrine. Pick up a rock, go inside, and jump into bed. You'll wake up in a weird dungeon-area. The only enemies in here are Mimics who, like the Shy Guys, will mimic your every move and are vulnerable if you're not looking at them (unless you have a Piece of Power - if you get one, consider yourself lucky). The first one is easy - look away and use a Spin Attack, then go up. In this screen, there are 4 Mimics. Kill the first one, jump over the second one, kill the third one, and jump over the fourth one, then go left. The next screen will have 3 in a row, then 2 others. Kill the first one and jump over the next 2 (if you hold down right, this shouldn't be a problem, although you might end up killing two of them with 1 Spin Attack, making it easier). Kill the next one, then jump over the last one and go down. 4 in a row. Kill the first 2 and jump over the other 2, then go up the two sets of stairs and up to a chest with 100 rupees inside (you're cashing in now). Go down, destroy the crystal, and go right and up the two sets of stairs. Inside this chest is the Ocarina. If you've played Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask, you will be disappointed - you can't play this freely (although it's fun to hear Link try to play this). Go down a screen and jump off the ledge and out the door to wake up and get out of here.

ETHICS ALERT: If you EVER have a dream like this in real life, it's probably from eating something weird before going to bed. Just be aware of this.

Once you're out of the Dream Shrine, go down 1 and left 1 screen and talk to Marin. Answer "Yes" to her and she'll teach you the Ballad of the Wind Fish (1). While this doesn't serve any real purpose until you get all of the Instruments, it's good to get it now.

Go right 3 and up 2 screens. You're getting close to the Graveyard now, and as such, Zombies are starting to pop out of the ground and come towards you. 1 hit from your sword will kill them, but they'll never stop coming. Their movement speed also varies from Zombie to Zombie. Go up 1 (this is where you would've had to go to get the Magic Powder, but I made it easier for you. You're welcome), left 1, and down 1 screen. There's a lone bush here - slice it and dig where it once was to get a Secret Seashell (13). Once again, watch out for the Zombies.

VIII – DX VERSION ONLY – TO THE COLOR DUNGEON

If you do not have the DX Version, skip ahead to “Back to the Plot…”

Go up 1 and right 2 screens to enter the Graveyard. Here there are Ghinis, which are ghosts that just fly around. 8 hits from your sword will kill them. Zombies also lurk around in some of the screens. Anyway, go down 1 and right 1 screen. Here, there are 5 Gravestones and a Ghini (although there are 3 more hiding in graves). Kill the Ghini, then bump the other graves to make the rest of the Ghinis come out, and kill them (bottom center, upper right, and upper left graves). Now that the enemies are all gone, push the bottom center grave down, then the bottom left grave to left, then the upper left grave up, then the upper center grave right, and lastly the upper right grave up (slice the grass above it first) – in that order – to reveal a secret staircase. Go down.

TRICK: If you hit the original Ghini 7 times, then get the other 3 to come out and hit the original an 8th time to kill it, the others will also die.

IX – Level 0: The Color Dungeon

l0colordungeonmb9.png

Anyone who’s played the original Legend of Zelda for NES (now also for Gamecube and GBA) will recognize the dungeon’s music immediately. Anyway, go up and talk to the Stalchildren and tell them what colors they are, and they’ll move out of the way, allowing you to go up. You’ll see some eyes in this room. If you come near them, they’ll chase you for a while, then pop up, revealing that they’re Slimelings. Keep running until they pop up, then hit them with your sword (1 hit each) to kill them, then go right 1 screen. Here, there are 4 Color Changers. You have to make them all the same color. Hit the upper right one, then the lower left one, and they’ll all be the same, creating a chest with the Compass inside. Now go to the bottom wall of this screen and bomb the center of it. Go down to find a room full of rupees! This will get you 140 rupees. Now leave this dungeon and go to the Trendy Game until you have 980 rupees, and buy the Bow from the store (remember the rupee trick). Buy another 10 arrows to max out your current capacity (30). Also, refill your Magic Powder supply to 20 while you’re at the Trendy Game (if it’s not already maxed). Now go back to the Color Dungeon.

Once you’re back in the dungeon, go up 1 and right 2 screens. There’s a Flying Minion here. If you hit it, it will lose its wings and hop around, and 2 more hits will kill it. It’s not necessary to kill it, but it will drop bombs. The colored pads on the floor are jump pads – when you step on one, you’ll be launched into the air. If you land on one enough times, it will become a pit, so watch out. Green = 3 more times, yellow = 2 more times, red = 1 more time. Go right another screen. There are 2 Sphereyes in here – these can only be destroyed when they’re in their colored holes. The green one goes in the green one, and the red one goes in the red one. Hit one with your sword, and it will curl into a sphere, so that you can pick it up with your Power Bracelet and throw it into its hole. Once both of them are in their holes, they’ll explode. If you hit one, and then leave it alone for too long (assuming it’s not in its hole), it will uncurl. Note that when a Sphereye is in its hole, you can step on it and not get hurt or fall in, but if the hole is empty, you can fall in. Also note that they will charge at you sometimes when they’re not in their sphere forms. Anyway, once they’re dead, open the chest that appears for a Stone Beak, then go down. There are 4 Slimelings and a large pit in here. Kill the Slimelings and go left 1 screen. There are 2 Minions in here (if they weren’t flying before, they only take 1 hit), hopping around. Kill them or let them fall into the pits that they’ll probably create, then open the chest for a Small Key. Go up 1 screen through the revolving door, then right 1 and up 1 screen. Two Flying Minions in here. Either kill them or ignore them, and go up another screen where another Color Changer Puzzle is. Hit the lower right one once, then the upper left one twice to make a Small Key fall from the sky. Go right 1 screen and kill the Slimelings, then go up 1 screen using a key.

Miniboss time. This is the Mega Gel. It will transform into an Giant Buzz right away. You haven’t encountered Buzzes yet, but they look like Squids that are electrified. In this form, it will move around and shoot 4-way electric bolts. Watch out for those, then sprinkle some Magic Powder on it to return it to its Gel form. Now you can hit it with your sword (watch out – it jumps around in this form). 2 hits will return it to the Buzz form. Repeat this 3 times (a total of 6 sword hits) to kill it (releasing a small fairy), then go left and move the upper and lower blocks left, and the middle block up or down to access the chest. Open it for the Nightmare’s Key. Go right 1, down 1, left 1, down 2, left 1, and up 1 to find… another miniboss. Yaaaaaay. This is the Golem. You’ll notice spikes on the ground – don’t touch these. The Golem will jump up and smash the ground, creating an avalanche. Jump when he lands so that you don’t get stunned, then avoid the rocks. Now, shoot 2 Arrows at it to kill it. Now you know why you left the dungeon – the bow is much mightier than the sword for this miniboss. Go left 1 screen. Avoid or kill the Minion and Flying Minion, then lift the upper left pot to reveal a floor switch. Step on it to open the doors, then go up 1 screen. There are 5 Zols (2 splitting, 2 hiding). Kill them all and a chest will appear with the Map inside. If you look at it, it looks vaguely like a shirt. Go right 1 screen and place all of the Sphereyes into their holes to make another Small Key appear. Go left 1, down 1, and left 1 screen (you won’t need to step on the floor switch again). Another Color Changer Puzzle. Hit them in this order: bottom center, right center, left center, and upper center. This will open the doors. Go up 1 screen and kill the 4 Zols (hiding), break the pots to restore your health, and then go left 1 screen using a key. Go up to the crystal switch and whack it with your sword, then walk across the barriers and go up to the Boss’ Lair.

Color Beetle

This guy’s just annoying. He’ll start off blue. Every time you hit him, he’ll get closer and closer to red. Whenever you hit him with your sword, though, you get bounced back, making it difficult to keep getting him closer to red. If you don’t hit him for a while, he’ll revert back to blue. He’ll also shoot things at you that can be blocked by your shield, but it’s easier to jump over them using Roc’s Feather. Use your Bow instead of your sword so that you can get him to red faster – 4 Arrows will make him say a warning, and then a Stalfos will come out. After hitting him numerous times with either your Arrows (which will likely run out) or your sword, it will die. I’m afraid I don’t know how many times it takes – just go nuts. Once he’s dead, a small fairy will be released. Go right 1 screen and talk to the Great Fairy of Color. She will give you a different tunic (hence the shape of the map). The Blue Clothes will make it so that you always have a Guardian Acorn. The Red Clothes will make it so that you always have a Piece of Power (minus the increased speed, unfortunately). For now, take the Red Clothes – you can always come back and switch, and the Red Clothes will make the next 2 bosses easier (I will continue to say how many hits it takes without the Red Clothes for all of the enemies – just halve the number to see how many hits it will take you). You’ll then be warped outside into the Graveyard. Go left 1, up 1, left 2, and down 1 screen (this is so that you’re on the same page as the non-DXers).

X – Back To The Plot…

Go up 1, right 1, down 3, right 1, up 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, up 1, right 1, down 2, and right 1 screen. Slice the bush to reveal a staircase. Go down it. There’s a Piranha in here. Kill it, then go right another screen. Here, there are 2 Piranhas and some crystals. Avoid the Piranhas, destroy a crystal, and go up the staircase (the darker water is too deep to walk on, so you’ll sink if you go in it – don’t do that. It doesn’t hurt you, but you do have to go back to where you entered the screen from). You’ll surface on the other side of a river. You’ll see some Buzzes. You can’t kill them yet, and physical contact will electrify you. Just go down 2 and right 1 screen to arrive in Animal Village. This village is inhabited solely by animals – bunnies, an alligator, a bird, a goat, a hippo, a walrus, a bear cub and a bear chef. Go right 1 and down 1 screen and go into the house, then talk to the bear chef to exchange your Honeycomb for a Pineapple. He’ll talk about a huge Walrus blocking the entrance to the Yarna Desert (your next destination), and that Marin’s singing could probably wake him up. Go out of the house, down 1, and left 1 screen to see your second warp hole. Jump inside to be warped to the other one (near Mabe Village). Go left 3, down 1, left 2, and down 2 to be back on the Toronbo Shores. Go right 2 and down 2 screens, then dash into the lone tree to knock loose a Secret Seashell (14). Now go up 1, left 1, down 2, and right 3 screens. Open the chest for 50 rupees, then go down 1 screen to find Marin. Say “yes” and listen to her talk for a while. Tell her you’re listening, and she’ll join you on your quest for a while (she totally has a crush on Link). She can’t get hurt, and doesn’t really have much of a purpose aside from waking the Walrus up and getting some pictures. Go up 1 and left 5 screens.

Photo 6: Go down a screen from here on the left side and go towards the indent. A cinematic sequence will occur with you and Marin, and Photo Mouse will take a picture (untitled). Once that’s done, go back up a screen.

Go up 2, right 1, up 1, left 1, and up 1 screen to be back in Mabe Village. Go up 1 screen.

Photo 7: Fall down the well again. Photo Mouse will be waiting for you, and will take a picture of Marin landing on top of you (“Heads Up!”). Nice guy, isn’t he?

Go right 2 and up 1 screen.

Photo 8: Go near the windmill, and another sequence will occur where Photo Mouse tries to take your picture. Tarin will come and interrupt the fun, saying that he should be in the picture, too (“Mushroom!”).

Go left 1 screen and fill your Arrow supply (if you have a Bow).

TRICK: If you go to the Trendy Game with Marin, she’ll ask to play. Let her (you’ll have to pay 10 rupees), and she’ll pick up the shopkeeper! Then the guy will throw you guys out because he doesn’t like pros in his game store.

From the shop, go right 2 screens and go into the warp hole back to Animal Village. Go right 1, up 1, left 1, down 2, and right 2 to reach the Walrus. Let Marin surprise him, and he’ll wake up, jump around, and fall into the water, clearing the way into Yarna Desert.

TRICK: If you come back to this screen after leaving and play Ballad of the Wind Fish on your Ocarina, the Walrus will pop its head out of the water and wonder why you aren’t Marin.

Go right 1 and up 2 screens. Here there are 3 Leevers. They’ll come out of the ground and come at you, then go back into the ground. 2 hits will kill them. Also note that touching the cacti will hurt you – avoid them. Go up another screen to fight the Lanmola. It will come out of the ground, leap into the air, and dive back into the ground. Also beware of the quicksand – if you get into the center, you’ll be sucked down into a cave, and you’ll have to go right, out of the cave, and left a screen to try again. Its head is its weak point – hit it with your sword 8 times to kill it, and it will drop the Angler Key, which opens the next dungeon. It will likely fall down the quicksand – follow it and grab it (DO NOT fall into the quicksand until the key does). You are now in a cave (watch out for the Antlions). Bomb the middle of the upper wall to reveal a cavern with a Heart Piece (6) inside. Then go down 1 and right 1 screen and out of the cave. Go down a screen (as far to the right as you can – be sure to continue avoiding the cacti), beat the Pokey (cactus thing – each hit will take off a segment unless you have a Piece of Power) and any Leevers that come near you, go down another 2 screens, and pick up the lower rock to find a Secret Seashell (15). Go up 3, left 1, and down 2. Listen to the owl talk about the key. Go down 1, left 2, up 2 (you’ll see Marin singing to the animals – how cute), right 1, down 1, and left 1 screen, and jump into the warp hole again. Go up 5, left 1, up 1, right 1, and up 1 screen. Beat the Moblins and lift the rocks to gain access to the upper path, then go right 4, down 1, right 1 (there’s a Skull Frame here – they jump around and die in 2 hits), up 1, and right 1 screen. Push the keyhole, and the Waterfall will stop, revealing the next dungeon. Go right 1 screen to see a warp hole (which is now available to you), then go left 2, down 1, left 1, up 1, left 2, and up 1 to reach Tal Tal Heights.

Lift a rock and go into the cave. There’s a Beetle and 3 Keese in here. Knock the Beetle away and kill the Keese, then go right 1 screen. Push the nearby stone up into the pit, then slice the tree shoot (and kill the Zol) and push the stone to your right to the right and the stone below it down. There are actually 2 Zols hiding here – if either or both of them are out of the ground, the lanterns will shoot fire at you. You can’t defend yourself from the fire, so be careful. Anyway, go down the staircase. 2 Keese and a hiding Zol here. Kill them and go right to the next screen, which has the same enemies, so kill them and go up the staircase. Go right 1 screen and out of the cave. The chest here contains 50 rupees. Go back into the cave, destroy the crystals, go right 1 screen, break the other crystal, and go back out of the cave. Go right 1 screen (you’ll see the husband of that woman you gave the Yoshi Doll to up here – you’ll get to him soon) and into the cave. Kill the Keese and the hiding Zol, then go up 1 screen, kill the 4 hiding Zols, and go up the staircase. Inside the chest is a Zol – kill it, go down 1 screen, kill the 4 Keese, and go out of the cave. Go down 1 and left 1 screen, then talk to the guy and exchange your Pineapple for a Hibiscus Flower. It’s so pretty. Go up 1 screen and jump off the ledge to go down 1 screen (the guy’s gone! Man, he moves fast). Now go right 2 screens and jump off the huge ledge to find yourself in front of the Angler’s Tunnel. Go inside.

XI - Level 4: Angler's Tunnel

l4anglerstunnelwn9.png

Go up 1 screen and kill the splitting Zol and 2 Spine Beetles, then go right through the door that opened and defeat the same group of enemies (watch out for the Spiny). Open the chest for the Compass. Go down 1 screen and kill the 4 Tektites (2 hits each), once again watching out for the darker water. Grab the Small Key from the chest and go up 1 and left 1 screen. Climb the stairs and go right 2 screens. The chest here contains the Stone Beak. Go left 1, up 2, right 1, and up 1 screen to get the Map. Look at it to see that the dungeon looks kinda like a fish pointing downwards. Kinda. Go down 1 screen and use a Running Jump to clear the pit, then go right 1 screen. There's a Tektite, an Antifairy, and a Peahat in here. The Peahat can not be harmed unless it's resting on the ground (2 hits will kill it). Most of the time, it's just easier to avoid them. Kill the Tektite, watch out for the Antifairy, and blow up the cracked block. Then push the other block into the water and open the chest for a Small Key. Go up 2 screens (avoiding or killing the 2 Tektites and 2 Peahats in the first screen). Bomb the cracked block, avoid the 2 Antifairies, kill the Tektite if you want, and get the Small Key from the chest. Grab the Flying Heart if you need it, then go down 2, left 2, down 2, left one, down the stairs (kill the enemies), right 2 using a key (kill the enemies along the way), and up 2 screens using a key. Kill the splitting Zols here and once again use a Running Jump to clear the pits and go up. Use a key on the block, then push the block behind it up. Defeat the Skull Knight, the hiding Zol, and the Top (it just spins around and bounces off walls - one hit will kill it) and go left 1 screen. Kill the splitting Zols and a key will fall down a pit. That's a big help. Go down 1 screen and beat the 2 Spine Beetles and the hiding Zol. Go down another screen and kill the 2 Tektites and the Peahat, then jump your way over to go left 2 screens (killing the Tektites if you wish). There are 3 Peahats here - kill them or avoid them, then go up another screen. Kill the Skull Warrior, Skull Knight, and splitting Zol, then open the chest to find another Zol (which you should kill). Go up 1 and right 1 screen (kill or ignore the Tektites). In this room, there's a Spiny and 2 statues that shoot fireballs at you. Quickly grab the Small Key from the chest, then go left 1, down 2, right 2, and up 3 (using a key) to enter the miniboss lair.

This is the Giant Beetle. It will move around the perimeter of the room fairly quickly. Stand near a corner of the middle barrier, on whichever side the Giant Beetle is not coming from (for example, if it's going clockwise, stand in the lower right corner on the bottom side). When it gets close, hit it with your sword right where the eyes are - this is its weak point. Its shell cannot be penetrated. Once hit, it will spin around and go back the other way. It may stop, turn around, and then come back again, so keep that in mind. 8 hits will kill it. Once he's done for, a warp and a small fairy will appear. Grab the fairy and go up 1 screen. There's a Spiny in here and 2 blocks at either entrance that continually move together, blocking your exits. The lever in the upper right corner, when pulled, will pull the blocks apart. Go for this lever right away, grab it with your Power Bracelet, and pull. Once the blocks won't go any farther, let go and run towards the left exit (watch out for the Spiny). Kill the 2 splitting Zols (beware of the fire shooting statues) and grab the chest with the Flippers inside! Finally, you can swim and dive. You'd think Link would've learned that already, because otherwise he wouldn't have shipped off in the first place, would he have? I mean, there aren't any life jackets in Hyrule.

TRICK: The game tells you about this, but when you're in the water, you can press A to swim and B to dive. You can't dive forever, but when you're underwater, you can't be hurt by enemies on the surface.

ETHICS ALERT: Kids, don't be like Link. Learn how to swim, and ALWAYS wear a life jacket. ...When near water, I mean. Don't wear them to the mall or anything, unless you're afraid that you'll drown inside of a GameStop.

Go down 1 screen to encounter a splitting Zol and 2 Helmasaurs. These guys can only be hurt from behind, so maneuver yourself around them and hit them in the butt. 2 hits each. You don't have to kill these, though - nothing will happen. You'll also notice a glowing tile - this won't do anything except open the door back up, which you'll never need to do, so go down another screen (watch out for the fireballs and 2 hiding Zols) and right 2 screens. Kill the Skull Knight, the hiding Zol, and the Top, then go down the staircase. Once downstairs, jump onto the moving platform to get across the spikes and go to the left room. Jump into the water and grab the Small Key that had fallen down the hole before, then go back to the right and up the staircase.

TRICK: While under water in these side-scrolling areas, your "press A to swim and B to dive" is cancelled. Instead, you can move freely underwater and use basically any of your weapons, including, surprisingly enough, Bombs. The only really useful things are your sword (to attack) and the Roc's Feather (to get out of the water quicker).

Go left 1, down 1, and right 1 (killing the enemies along the way) and open the chest for 50 rupees. After that, go down 1, left 1, and up 2 screens (killing or avoiding any enemies). Kill the 3 tektites, and then stand on the tiles in this order: center, upper right, lower right, lower left, upper left. A staircase will appear. Go down it and you'll see a Thwomp. Use your Pegasus Boots to dash past it, and go left 1 screen. Run past the other Thwomp, then get close to it on the left side - not under, just close enough that it will fall. Then, quickly jump up the ladder and onto the Thwomp, and then jump onto the left platform and go up the staircase. When you emerge, go down 1 screen and get the chest with the Nightmare's Key inside. Go up 1 screen, jump off the ledge, go right 1 screen, and step on the floor switch to open the door. If you don't have a Piece of Power or a Guardian Acorn, get one now and come back here. Go up 1 screen, grab the Flying Heart, use a key on the block, and go down the staircase. Down here, jump into the water and slice the 2 Cheep-Cheeps with your sword (1 hit each). They move slowly and predictably, so it shouldn't be difficult. Once you do that, swim left 1 screen and up the staircase. Go left 1 screen when you emerge, push the block out of the way, and kill the 3 splitting Zols, then go up using the Nightmare's Key. All you'll see is a staircase. Go down it, then swim down 1 screen to see the boss.

Angler

This boss is a cinch. Just hit its bulb with your sword 10 times to beat it. It will mostly just float up and down. Occasionally it will ram into a wall, sending rocks down on top of you, but if you're fast, you won't have to worry about this. Smaller versions of it will swim across the screen, but they're easily avoidable. Once it dies, grab the Heart Container (you now have 8) and jump up the water and back up the ladder. Then go up 1 screen and get the fourth instrument, the Surf Harp. You're halfway done! You’ll be warped outside with a message telling you of a bay. Wonderful. More water.

XII – To The Catfish’s Maw

Once you’re outside, go left one screen and go in the cave. Talk to Manbo the giant fish and tell him that you have an ocarina to learn Manbo’s Mambo (2). Then go out of the cave and go right 1 screen and back into the dungeon. Go up 1, don’t go up the stairs, right 2, and up 1 screen and swim over to the chest for 50 rupees. Now play Manbo’s Mambo to warp to the beginning of the dungeon. Isn’t that convenient? Go out of the dungeon and go right 3 screens and into the cave. Dive underwater and swim around to find a Heart Piece (7). Then leave the cave and go left 3 screens – back to the entrance of the dungeon. Don’t go inside – just get onto land and play Manbo’s Mambo. You will be warped to Manbo’s Pond, outside Crazy Tracy’s house. This is great when you use your Secret Medicine and would like another. Go down 1 screen, and you’ll notice a Ghost following you. Don’t worry – it can’t hurt you. It just follows you around, telling you to take it back to its house. Go down 4 and left 2 screens to be back in Mabe Village. You should have enough rupees for the Bow now, if you aren’t playing the DX version – if not, play the Trendy Game until you have 980 rupees, then buy it (use the rupee trick) and 10 arrows to max out your supply (30). From here, go down 1, left 3, and down 2 to get to Toronbo Shores. Go down 2, right 6, and down 1 screen to get to his old house. He looks around, cries, and then says to take him back to his grave. Before that, though, go right 1 screen. Use a Running Jump to clear the pits, then go right 1 screen. Swim to the middle island (watch out for the Zora) and chop the bush to find a Secret Seashell (16). Now go back to the main land and go up 1 and right 1 screen for another Secret Seashell (17). After that, go down 1 screen. Find a place where there are only 2 pits before the bushes. From here, jump towards the bushes and slice to get rid of a bush. You might fall into a pit and lose a half of a heart, but that’s okay. If you do, use a Running Jump to clear the pits, and go to the staircase. Once down here, go up 1 and left 1 screen, avoiding the piranhas, and go up the staircase. Avoid the Buzz, go left 1 screen, and go down the stairs. Look familiar? Yep, it’s the Bipolar Bat again! Sprinkle some Magic Powder into his well and listen to him. Say no to upgrading Magic Powder, and yes to upgrading Arrows. Now you can carry 60 Arrows. Now leave this place and play Manbo’s Mambo to warp to Manbo’s Pond. Go left 1 and down 3 screens. Go to the left and back up 1 screen to the Ghost’s Grave. He’ll go into his grave, and the Owl will appear and tell you to go to Martha’s Bay. We’ll get there later.

Photo 9: After the Ghost is in his grave, go towards it, and Photo Mouse will take a picture of you with the grave (“I Was Very Afraid.”). When it develops, the Ghost is with you in the picture…

Okay, go back to the Ghost’s House (up 1, right 1, down 3, left 2, down 1, left 3, down 4, right 6, and down 1). Go inside and pick up the lower right pot for a Secret Seashell (18). You couldn’t get this until the Ghost was back in his grave, unfortunately. Play Manbo’s Mambo again and go down 5, right 1, up 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, up 1, right 1, up 1, right 2, up 4, and into the water. Then go left 3 and down 4 and dive. Swim around to find a Piece of Heart (8), completing another Heart Container (of which you now have 9). Go back up 4 and right 3 and surface on the lower shore, then go down 6, left 2, and down 3 to enter Martha’s Bay. Don’t mind the Mermaid – she can’t help you yet. Go right 1 and up 1, then surface on the lower shore and go right 1, down 1, and right 1. You’re back in Animal Village. Go right 1 screen and go into the first house you see. Talk to the goat, give her the Flower, and accept her request to get a Letter to Mr. Write. Too bad you don’t have a Mail Truck.

Go outside of the house and play Manbo’s Mambo to warp to Manbo’s Pond again. From here, go left 5 and up 1 screen. Go into the house and talk to Mr. Write to get a Broom.

ETHICS ALERT: Note that the picture that was with the letter showed a beautiful woman and not, in fact, a goat. This kind of thing happens on online dating sites constantly, so I’ve heard. Just keep on your guard when trying that stuff out.

Leave the house and go up 1 screen and into the cave. Jump over the pit for 20 rupees in a chest, then jump back over and go right 1 screen. Beat the hiding Zols and pick up the skull to access the chest with 50 rupees inside. Now go out and play Manbo’s Mambo again. Go down 5, left 3, down 2, and left 1 screen. Talk to Grandma Ulrira, who seems to have lost her broom (what a hobby…). Give her the Broom and she’ll give you a Fishing Hook that she had found before when sweeping. Go right 1, up 2, and right 3 screens, then use the warp twice to reach Animal Village again. Once there, go right 1, up 2, left 2, down 2, left 1, and up 1 screen. Dig in the upper left most patch (beware of the Zoras) to find a Secret Seashell (19). Now go down 1, jump off the bridge into the water on the right where you can, and dive underneath the bridge. You’ll see a Fisherman. Give him the Fishing Hook, and he’ll promise to give his next catch to you. He goes fishing, and catches a Pearl Necklace. I know – you wanted the fish. Too bad. Leave him to the right and swim up 2 and left 1 screen to get back to the Mermaid, who claims that the necklace is hers. Give it back, and she’ll give you a Mermaid Scale. Go down 1 screen to see a huge cave that looks like a Catfish’s Mouth. In the lower left corner of the outlying rock formation is an indent – dive here. Underwater, swim right 1 screen and surface, then enter the cave (which happens to be the next level).

XIII – Level 5: Catfish’s Maw

l5catfishsmaw.png

From the entrance, go left 2 screens (you can kill the splitting Zol and the Helmasaur, but remember to avoid the Spiny if you do). Defeat the 4 Keese and the Helmasaur to open the door to the left, and go through it. Open the chest for the Compass, then go down the staircase (ignore the Helmasaurs for now). Here you’ll see 2 pulley systems. Jumping on one will raise the other. Step on the first one until it’s a little lower than the second one, then jump to the second one and then to the left platform and go left 1 screen. 4 pulley systems here. The first one corresponds with the third one, and the second one corresponds with the fourth one. Step on the first one until the third one is about even with the second one, then jump to the second one to raise the fourth one to about the same height, then quickly jump to the third and to the fourth and to the left platform with the ladder. Go up it.

There are 4 Stalfos in here. 2 are the kind that pounce on you, and 2 are the kind that jump away from your sword. Unfortunately, the latter type now have a defense mechanism – once they land after jumping away, they’ll throw a bone at you. This can be stopped by your shield or sword, but be aware of it. Once they’re all defeated, hack the tree shoots away and push the upper blocks together to make a complete square. A Small Key will fall from the sky. Collect it, then go back down the staircase. You won’t need to worry about the pulley systems this time – just hop down and go right 1 screen, then climb up the ladder, fall to the right, and jump up to the other ladder and resurface. Now, kill the Helmasaurs to open the door and go right 1 and up 1 screen (using your newly acquired key). Defeat or ignore the enemies (a Helmasaur and one of each kind of Stalfos) and go up. Kill the 3 Stalfos (2 pouncing, one retreating) and go up 1 screen to meet Master Stalfos.

He’ll drop to the ground. Hit him with your sword (it’s easiest to do this with a Spin Attack) and he’ll collapse. Lay a Bomb where he is, and it will explode, hurting him. If you wait too long, he’ll get back up, and the Bomb will not hurt him. Do this 3 times, and he’ll run away. Go right 1 screen. Defeat the 3 hiding Zols and open the chest for a note saying that Master Stalfos stole the item that was once in here. What a jerk. Go up 1 screen. Push the block up (avoiding the Spinys) and go left 1 screen, then come back and push the block to the right and go up 1 screen. Now go back down, step on the floor switch, move the block down, and go right 1 screen to find Master Stalfos again. He’ll only take 2 hits this time before running away. Go left 1 screen and DON’T MOVE once you enter. The Spiny will roll past you. Cool, huh? Now push the block to the left and go back up 1 screen. Jump over the pit, kill the 2 Skull Warriors and the Top, then go up 1 screen. Kill the Top and the Skull Knight and go left 1 screen. Avoid the Spiny and kill the 2 hiding Zols. Now pick up one of the pots along the diagonal barricade and move one of the blocks so that you can reach the other side, and kill a third hiding Zol to open the door. Go up 1 screen and defeat Master Stalfos again (2 hits again). Go left 1 screen, defeat the 3 Stalfos (1 pouncing and 2 retreating), then grab the Flying Heart if you need it and open the chest for the Map (Stone Slab in the non-DX version). When you look at it, it looks like an eel. Or a snake. Or something like that. But it’s an eel. Anyway, play Manbo’s Mambo to return to the beginning of this dungeon.

From the beginning, go left 3 screens and down the staircase again. Move across the pulley systems, go left, move across the other pulley systems, and go up the staircase. Defeat the Stalfos again and go left 1 screen to fight Master Stalfos for the last time. I promise, it really is. When he finally dies, he’ll drop the Hookshot. Now go back right 1 screen, down the stair case, right 1 screen, and up the staircase. You remember how the Helmasaurs have that protective helmet? Use the Hookshot on them. If they aren’t facing you, they’ll die. If they are facing you, you’ll steal their helmets, making them completely vulnerable. Happy days. Kill them both and go right 2 screens (using the upper path). Hookshot to the chest and open it for 200 rupees! Now Hookshot back across the pit (the square blocks can also be Hookshot targets) and left 1, up 1 (the Hookshot hurts Stalfos, too, and kills them in 1 hit), and left 1. Wait for the Floor traps to split, then Hookshot to the block and kill the 2 Helmasaurs. Go left 1 screen and defeat the 2 Helmasaurs (you can pick up a pot to trap the Spiny in one spot), get the Flying Bomb to refill your supply, and grab the chest that appears to get the Stone Beak (Map in the non-DX version). Go right 1 and up 1 screen. Kill the splitting Zols (now only 1 hit with your Hookshot), grab the Flying Arrow, and go left 1 screen. Hookshot to the block on the other side of the pits to zip past the Floor Traps. Defeat the 2 hiding Zols and go left 1 screen. Hookshot to the chest and open it for a Small Key, then kill the 3 Helmasaurs and get the Flying Arrow if you need it. Go right 2 screens. On the far right of this screen, you’ll see a hook. Hookshot it to extend a bridge for you to cross (the pot near the bridge contains a small fairy if you need it) and go up 1 screen. Ignore the Antifairy, kill the splitting Zol, and go left 1 screen using a key on the block.

This is the REAL mini-boss – 2 Gohmas. They’ll scuttle back and forth across the screen, and they have 2 attacks – one attack is the charge, which you’ll notice when they stop moving and start shaking. Hold out your shield, and they won’t hurt you. The other attack is a fireball – they’ll stop moving completely, open their eyes, and shoot a fireball at you. When the eye opens, shoot an Arrow at them to hurt them. 3 Arrows each. Your shield will also block their fireballs, so just hold it out for the whole battle. Take care of them one at a time, which is easy because only one will attack you at a time. After attacking, they may start moving again right away, or they might attack again. While they’re moving, run back and forth along side of the one you’re fighting until it attacks. Each one will drop a heart when defeated (lame). Once they’re both dead, a Warp will appear. Use it and return to the beginning of the dungeon again.

Go left 2, up 3, right 1, up 1, and left 1 screen. Wait for the Floor Traps to split, then Hookshot to the crystals and defeat the Top and the Skull Knight (both of which die with 1 Hookshot hit). Go up 1 screen, defeat the Tektites, and dive into the center of the deep water. In the first screen, you find 2 Octos. Kill them with either your Hookshot or your Sword (1 hit each), the go left 1 screen. Beat the other 2 Octos, jump on the Goomba if you need a heart, and go up the ladder. Hookshot the hook to make a bridge, then go and get the chest containing the Nightmare’s Key. Go back down the staircase, right 1 screen (killing the enemies), surface, and go down 1, right 1, and up 1 screen. Jump over the pit, then jump diagonally down and to the right to the platform and Hookshot the chest. It contains 50 rupees. Now go right 1 screen and Hookshot across to get the chest with a Small Key inside, then Hookshot back across and go left 1 and up 1 screen. Grab the Flying Heart if you need it, then get the chest with 50 more rupees inside. Now play Manbo’s Mambo and warp, once again, to the beginning of this dungeon (last time – really).

Go left 2, up 3, and right 1 screen, then go down the staircase. Down here, there are two Cheep-Cheeps swimming back and forth. Every once in a while, they’ll jump up – this is when you can hit them with your Hookshot (since it has a longer reach than your sword). If they jump up underneath you, they’ll also die (Mario, anyone?). Once they’re dead, jump over to the next platform and go left 1 screen. Kill these two Cheep-Cheeps, then jump across to the ladder on the left and go up. Once you’re up, kill the Skull Warrior and Skull Knight (watch out for the fireball shooting statues) and go right 1 screen. Kill the 3 Tops (and avoid the Antifairy) to open the door, then go right 2 screens (avoiding the Spiny). Push the bottom block to the right and go down the staircase. Now go back up – there’s no reason to go down there completely. Once you’re back up, use a key on the block, then Hookshot across the huge pit and go right 1 screen and up into the Nightmare’s Lair.

Slime Eel

Quite possibly the most frustrating boss in the game, in terms of length of time it takes. As soon as you enter, run to the lower left corner. His tail will pop out of the center, and 4 Eels will pop out of each corner. 3 are fakes. The one in the upper left corner is the real one. Making sure to avoid the tail (which circulates in a fairly rigid pattern, unfortunately), wait until the upper left Eel comes out, then use the Hookshot to drag him to you. You’ll have to be quick – he’ll come out, roar, and go back in. Once you hook him, slice rapidly with your sword as many times as you can before he retreats. He’ll stay in this corner UNLESS you drag a different one out (and, since there’s no point in doing so, don’t do it). Once you hit him 16 times, he’ll die, leaving you with a Heart Container (10 now). Go up 1 screen and get the Wind Marimba, the next instrument. You’ll next be warped out with a message about a shrine, but you don’t care – you have this guide.

XIV – To The Face Shrine

Once you’re outside, dive back out of the rocky formation and swim right 1 screen, and get out of the water. Now go up 2, right 1, down 3, left 1, and down 1 screen. Hookshot across the water via the rock, then go up 1 and left 1 screen to a Mermaid Statue. Examine it to put your Mermaid Scale onto the statue, pushing it aside and revealing a staircase. Go down it. You’ll see absolutely nothing in this room, so go up 1 screen to receive the Magnifying Lens, which will reveal many secrets to you. Go back down 1 screen, and you’ll see 2 Mimics and 3 splitting Zols that you couldn’t see before! Weird, huh? Kill them and leave the cave, then play Manbo’s Mambo.

DX VERSION ONLY PARAGRAPH

Go down 2, right 1, down 1, and right 1. Move the graves again and reenter the Color Dungeon. Go up 1, right 2, up 1, left 2, up 1, left 1, up 1, and right 1 to reach the Great Fairy again. Talk to her and exchange your Red Clothes for the Blue Clothes. Your sword won’t damage any more of the bosses, and you’re getting a better sword soon, so it will be more beneficial to you to have double defense, especially with the dungeon difficulty increasing. You’ll be taken outside. Play Manbo’s Mambo to regroup with the non-DXers.

Go down 2, left 1, down 1, and right 1. Lift a rock and go down the staircase. Knock the Beetle into a pit and kill the 2 Keese, then go right 1 screen. Kill the Keese, then jump over to the cracked stone. Bomb it, then Hookshot to the far stone and jump over the pit to get a Piece of Heart (9). Push the upper stone left and the lower stone down, then go up the staircase. You’ll appear in the Graveyard.

TRICK: If you go right 1 and up 1 screen from where you are in the Graveyard and bump the lower right grave, a Giant Ghini will appear. There isn’t much point to fighting it, as it won’t get you anything special, but it looks kinda cool.

Go up 1, left 1, down 3, left 3, down 1, left 2, down 5, and right 3 screens. There are some Crabs here. Their vertical movement is very slow, while their horizontal movement is extremely fast. 2 hits each will kill them. Go right another screen and blow up the sealed cave with a Bomb (ignore or kill the Crab and 2 Leevers). Go inside. Thanks to the Magnifying Lens, you can see a weird Mole creature who claims to have found an item washed up on the shore. Put your Shovel in your B Slot, then talk to him and exchange your Shovel (no, you won’t need it anymore – I promise) for a Boomerang, one of the best weapons in the game. This handy device will destroy bushes, retrieve items, and kill Antifairies and Spinys (finally). Leave the cave and play Manbo’s Mambo again.

Go down 5 screens and use the warp twice to get to Animal Village. Go right 1, up 1, left 1, down 2, right 1, and up 3, then bomb the sealed cave and go inside. Push the stone(s) into the hole, then go left 1 screen. Jump over the pit above you and go up 1 screen. Now comes the coolest thing in the entire game: put your Bow in one slot and your Bombs in the other. Face the shattered stone and press both buttons at the same time. You’ll shoot a Bomb Arrow, which, while cool, is really only useful this 1 time. But it’s still cool. Anyway, Hookshot to the other stone and get the Piece of Heart (10), then jump off the ledge and kill the 3 hiding Zols. Go right 1 screen, kill the 3 Keese, and bomb the lowest point in this screen to go down. Knock the Beetle into the hole, then jump down, push the stone(s) into the hole, and leave. Go down 3, left 1, and up 3 screens.

Photo 10: Go right 1 screen and enter the right most house (Grandma Ulrira is sweeping outside… what a freak…). You’ll go towards the pond, and a Zora will pop out (which you can now see because of the Magnifying Lens). Photo Mouse will come and take a picture of you two together (“I Found Zora.”).

Photo 11: From the previous Photo experience, go out of the house and left 2, down 2, left 1 screen, and into the water. Dive to visit the Fisherman again, and he’ll catch Photo Mouse, who’ll want to take a picture (untitled). Link’s craziness will knock the Fisherman into the water. Leave the Fisherman to the right, then go up 1 screen, out of the water, and up 2, right 1, down 1, and right 1 to regroup with the non-DXers.

Go left 1, up 3, and right 2 screen. The owl will appear to tell you about the Northern and Southern Shrine. The Northern Shrine is the next dungeon, but the Southern Shrine holds the key to the dungeon, so we’re going to the Southern Shrine first. Go right 2 and down 1 screen. You’ll see a lot of statues. Most of these are just statues, but some of them will come alive and become Armos if you touch them. Armos can be killed with 2 Boomerang hits, which is the main reason why you got that. They’ll also yield an Arrow when they die, which you can pick up to refill your supply. Also be aware that there are numerous hiding Zols in these ruins. Go down 1 and left 1 screen. Touch the Armos in your way, and it will come to life. Kill it, then go left 1 (using the upper path) and up 1 screen. Go up the right sided path and touch the upper most Armos to your right. Kill it and go right 1 screen. Touch the lower right Armos here and kill it, then go down the staircase that appears. Open the chest for a Secret Seashell (20)! Hooray! You’re done collecting them! Technically, there are 26 in all, but you only need 20, so forget it. Go back up the staircase and play Manbo’s Mambo.

Go down 5, right 1, up 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, up 1, right 1, down 1, right 1, and up 1 – back to the Seashell Mansion. For the last time. Go inside and go towards the pillar. A new sword will appear in front of you. Pick it up for the L-2 Sword, the most powerful sword in the game (which resembles the Master Sword from other Zelda games)! It’s twice as powerful as your old sword. If your health is full when you swing this sword, you’ll shoot a beam forward, which will do the same amount of damage as the sword itself. Pretty nice. Now leave and go down 1, left 1, down 1, right 2, Hookshot across the water, up 1, right 4, down 2, left 2, and up 1 screen. This time, take the left path and touch the upper most Armos on your left, kill it, and go down 1 (as far to the left as you can) and left 1 screen. Kill the lower Armos in your way, then the upper Armos in your way, then go up 1 screen and into the Southern Shrine. Go up 1 screen to find the Mega Armos. Just keep shooting Arrows at him. When he jumps, jump to avoid getting stunned. 5 hits will destroy his shield, 4 more will destroy his helmet, and 3 more will kill him. You’ll get the Face Key for beating him. Go up 1 screen and light both lanterns using your Magic Powder. Go up to the mural and examine it to read about what Koholint is rumored to be – a large, elaborate dream of the Wind Fish. Go down 2 screens and outside, and the owl will appear telling you that no one really knows if Koholint is a dream, so you should just not worry about it and continue on your quest to wake the Wind Fish. What a nice guy.

Go down 1, right 1, up 1, around and down 1, right 2, up 2, left 1, up 1, and left 1 screen. Bomb the sealed cave to access a Great Fairy (if you need it). Go into the lower body of water and swim down 1 screen, get out of the water, and kill the left Armos to get to a staircase. Go down it. Kill the piranhas, then go right 1 screen, Hookshot to the far stone, and go up the staircase. Once outside, go to the right and up to put the key into the keyhole, raising the Northern Shrine – the next dungeon. Go down 1, to the left, and up 1 screen and go into the Face Shrine.
