Recommend Stuff

Recommended Posts

I am a loser who spends most of my time not being on the internet and not learning about the coolness that I'm missing out on.

Recommend some movies (or anime if that's your thing), because I watch the same shows over and over.

Recommend some music, because I've listened to the same cd hundreds of times in the last month.

Recommend some books, because I've basically read nothing but R.A. Salvatore in the last year.

Recommend some other stuff, because I've probably missed out on the technology of a new form of entertainment.

But whatever you do... don't recommend video games. I've got this covered, I think. If I don't. You might let me know anyway.

Discuss these options amongst yourselves. I'll be back later. Thanks.

Yeah, it's better if you can narrow it down at all. I could recommend a lot of movies(though some you've most likely seen), but some narrowing down helps. The last couple good movies I watched were The Hunt For Red October and The Usual Suspects(which was great).

As for music, that's what Song a Day September is for! Fluke(I'll be featuring them tomorrrow or Tuesday), Poets of the Fall(Twilight Theater is best. They'll get a feature a little later), The Birthday Massacre(I like the Walking With Strangers album), Cage the Elephant's first album, Chemical Brothers or The Crystal Method(Vegas and Divided by Night), or Oh Possum for some weirder darker stuff(easiest to listen to online here: http://www.adamroberthaug.com/index.php?/oh-possum/)

Hope some of these fit your liking, I tried to keep a wide variety. I'll recommend more if you narrow down the genre :)

Sports are amazing. Take that back. I played tennis yesterday, for the first time, since middle school?

I can't narrow art down. I'm pretty open to anything that anybody considers amazing even by their own personal standards. It has to be resounding to you if you think it's amazing; therefore, you'd recommend it to anyone if they said, "give me something to try." If I disagree in the end, I'll have learned something either way. How do you box your interests into genres? I'm not sure how to label the things I like. Confound this English language.

Here's an attempt: I always dig thinking horror or cerebral horror. Psychological. Lovecraftian. Supernatural. Paranormal. Mindf*ck. That sort of thing. If that's something anyone here reads/watches, you'll kinda know what I'm on about, I think. I'm open to other, unrelated genres too.

Music: I like rock, punk, metal, folk, screamo (the actual kind), post-hardcore (also labeled screamo, but different genre apparently), ska punk, electronic and electronic-influenced genres,

What I'd avoid in music, I can easily answer: pop and most country (I like alt-country, but is that even country at all?). What I'd avoid in movies/shows is harder to say. I don't like soap opera-y stuff, but that isn't to say I'm against drama (i.e. Shawshank Redemption is an amazing movie, but I also think Stephen King usually creates interesting fiction).

Continue dialoguing with me.

@ Ego, I'm DLing both these movies. I like Birthday Massacre. I haven't heard anything since Violet though, so I'll be looking into their new sick Shaq-Fu. Chemical Brothers and Crystal Method are good also. The other stuff is new to me, so I'll check all that out too. I'll post more in my song a month thingy, so if anyone recognizes any of my crap, your replies of recommendation are welcome there too.

Cool. And as the month goes on, the stuff you put into that topic will give a better picture of what you like hearing. The Electronic/electronic-inspired stuff is my favorite stuff, so I'll probably recommend some more from there.

For those types of movies(which I also enjoy; you ought to enjoy the mystery in The Usual Suspects then), the one that springs to mind is Shutter Island. I know you said no video games, but Alan Wake is right up this alley. I don't mention that to recommend the game though; there are some elements of the game heavily inspired(or outright ripped off) the TV show Twin Peaks. I don't have first-hand experience with Twin Peaks, but the connection means you might be into that. Ask Sayakon, he watched the show semi-recently. If you're cool with it being very gruesome, Se7en is very good. Memento is always a good mind-bender, and Black Swan was beyond good.

I'm also a big sci-fi fan, so if you like that stuff too, there's, um, Blade Runner(you've probably seen this then), a more unknown movie Sunshine is cool. I'm kinda spacing on others, but I know there's more. This should get you started though.

teej, I like humorous crap. Recently I've watched Azumanga, Nyan Koi, Orenoimo and a few others.

I haven't listened to screamo in awhile. So, I don't know any newer bands. Thanks for the recs. Yaphet Kotto, The Fall of Boss Koala

If you liked Azumanga, check out Nichijou. It's still going at the moment, although I think it's ending soon.

Seconding this. Nichijou is great. Only 3 episodes left. ;_; You should also go watch Shinryaku! Ika Musume! (second series coming up next season, woo!) and Seto no Hanayome.

also Kaiji and Akagi. They're not remotely comedic but everyone should give one or the other (both is fine too) a try in my opinion.

I accept stealth sends to my PM boxness. Those are welcome. :D

Thanks very much for the anime recommendations, gents! As I get to them, I'll post and let you know how I like them. I'm not terribly picky, so I'll try to watch each series as I come to them.

If you like humorous, BoBo-Bo is the way to go. Best anime/manga I've ever watched read, after Bleach.

Maria Holic was okay too, the subject is a little sexual if thats not really your kind of humor.
